Dartmouth Drops Contest at Vermont
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore Eric Robinson (Foxboro, Mass.) had
two goals and Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) had three assists, but
the Dartmouth men's hockey team fell to nonconference opponent
Vermont Sunday afternoon, 5-3, at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Two goals by the Catamounts midway through the final frame and an
empty-netter with 2.9 seconds left helped the home team overcome a
3-2 deficit for the come-from-behind victory.
Robinson scored once in each of the first two periods, while
Lindblad had helpers on each Dartmouth (4-5-1) goal. Vermont's
Sebastian Stalberg scored twice, including the empty-netter with
2.9 showing on the clock to seal the win for the Catamounts (3-8-1)
in the battle between old ECAC Hockey rivals.
Just 4:45 into the game, Stalberg set the tone with the opening
goal. That early 1-0 lead would not last long, though.
Robinson scored his second in as many games when he picked the top
far corner 8:36 into the contest from the right faceoff dot.
Lindblad and Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) picked up the helpers as
they started the play with heads up forechecking in the corner and
low circle area.
After Michael Paliotta gave the Catamounts a 2-1 lead 11:00 into
the second, Dartmouth turned up the offensive pressure and got the
equalizer in a flurry in front of Vermont goaltender Alex Vazzano
at 17:16.
Dan Nycholat (Calgary, Alberta) fired a shot into a crowd in the
low slot. Lindblad collected the rebound and had a shot kicked out
to junior winger Jason Bourgea (South Burlington, Vt.). Bourgea
redirected the puck back out into the slot where Robinson netted
his second of the afternoon and third of the weekend.
A nifty wrist shot by Jones over the glove of the Vermont
goaltender at the 4:00 mark of the third period gave Dartmouth the
3-2 lead, but tallies from Drew McKenzie and Connor Brickley in a
span of 1:43 shortly thereafter allowed the home team to regain the
lead and never look back.
Jones' second of the weekend was assisted by Lindblad and
Nycholat.
Senior James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) took the loss as he allowed
four goals, while making 23 saves. Vazzao had 26 saves at the other
end of the ice to earn the victory.
It will be two weeks before Dartmouth takes to the ice again as a
Dec. 11 home game with Sacred Heart is the next contest on the
team's schedule. Faceoff between the Big Green and Pioneers is set
for 4 p.m.
NOTES: Defenseman Dan Nycholat was reinserted into the lineup after
being a scratch for the past three games and picked up his first
point in a Dartmouth sweater with a third-period assist...Jones now
has goals in consecutive games after not scoring in his first six
games...Robinson had three goals all of last season and now has
five through 10 games of 2011-12 to tie Tyler Sikura (Aurora,
Ontario) for the team lead...Playing in front of family and
friends, Bourgea (a South Burlington, Vt., native) picked up his
second point of the season with an assist in the second period.
