Engineers Post Road Shutout Victory
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman netminder Scott Diebold
stopped all 25 shots he faced to earn his first collegiate win and
shutout as the Rensselaer men's hockey team blanked RIT, 2-0, this
evening in non-league action from Frank Ritter Arena. With the win
the Engineers improve to 3-10 overall, while the Tigers drop to
5-4-2.
Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) was big down the stretch for
the Engineers stopping 20 shots in the second and third periods
combined. He aided in killing off all six RIT power-plays,
including three in the second period.
Rensselaer capitalized on a five-minute major penalty to Tigers'
freshman Brad McGowan (Langley, BC/Surrey Eagles) early in the
second period, scoring the game's only two goals on that
man-advantage.
Junior defenseman Nick Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) opened the
scoring at 1:30 of the second, on a wrist shot from the top of the
right circle. Bailen took a feed from freshman Jacob Laliberte
(Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) and ripped the puck just inside the
left post for his third tally of the season.
Engineers' freshman Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev.
Team) made it 2-0 1:10 later on one-timer finish right in front of
the RIT cage. Sophomore Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston
Voyageurs) carried the puck up the left wing boards and centered a
pass to Haggerty, who buried his third of the year, on the
power-play.
The Tigers had chances to pull within a goal in the second and
third periods, going on the man-advantage five times in that span,
but they were unable to beat Diebold. RIT did manage to hit the
crossbar twice in the third.
Diebold (1-2) earned the win, while Tigers' senior Shane Madolora
(Salinas, CA/Omaha Lancers) made 28 saves in defeat (4-1-1).
The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they visit ECAC
Hockey foes Princeton and Quinnipiac on Friday (7pm) and Saturday
(7pm), respectively. RIT travels to UConn for two-game series next
weekend.
