Special Teams Gives Tigers Exhibition Win Over Neumann

PRINCETON, N.J. (10/23/11) - Princeton special teams scored four of the Tigers' five goals as the men's hockey defeated Neumann University (DIII) 5-1 in an exhibition game on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Baker Rink.

The Princeton power play went 3 for 5 and the penalty kill was 8 for 9, as the Tigers outshot the Knights 42-18.

Sophomore Kevin Ross would pace the Princeton offense with a goal and an assist. He put the Tigers on the scoreboard at 14:22 of the first period with an unassisted goal. Neumann tried to clear the puck but Ross picked it up at the blue line on the left side and scored from behind the face off circle.

Princeton picked up six penalties in the second frame, including a major, for a total of 15 penalty minutes. Neumann would put 10 shots together with netminder Sean Bonar stopping nine of those shots. However it would be the Tigers that would win the second frame, scoring twice to Neumann's lone goal.

The teams traded power-play goals within 1:46 in the second period.

Sophomore Andrew Ammon gave Princeton a 2-0 lead at 9:03. Junior Michael Sdao picked up the puck behind the Princeton goal and passed off to senior Derrick Pallis. Pallis fed Ammon just inside the zone and Ammon scored glove side.

Neumann's Marlon Gardner scored a 5x3 power-play goal at 10:49 to make it a 2-1 game.

Sophomore Andrew Calof scored a beauty of a goal, a short-handed 3x5 goal at 13:32. He stripped the puck inside the Princeton zone and skated down 1v1 with a Neumann defender. Using some crafty stick work, Calof dragged the puck from right to left and flipped it over the goal line.

The Tigers would add two more power-play goals in the third. Sophomore Jack Berger tipped in an Eric Meland shot from the point at 10:26 and senior Marc Hagel buried a pass from Brodie Zuk from the behind the cage at 18:37 to give Princeton the 5-1 victory.

Neumann would use three goalkeepers in the game. Ross MacKinnon made 14 stops in the first, Ben Curley made seven saves in the second and Matt Tendler stopped 16 in the third period. Bonar played the entire game for Princeton and finished the game with 17 saves.

Princeton opens the regular season next weekend Oct. 28-29 at the Ivy League Shootout in Hanover, N.J., playing Yale and Brown.
