Bears Skate Past Waterloo for Exhibition Win
PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown men's hockey team scored a pair
of power play goals and senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA)
stopped 20 shots, as the Bears defeated Waterloo, 2-0, in an
exhibition contest on Sunday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. The
exhibition was the final pre-season event for the Bears, who open
their 2011-12 season on Friday, October 29, when they face
Dartmouth in first round action of the Ivy Showcase.
The Bears dominated the first period, outshooting Waterloo, 22-6.
However, Warriors' goalie, Justin Leclerc, was solid in net,
stopping 21 shots and keeping Brown off the board until the 15th
minute of the period when senior Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ)
scored on a two-man advantage. After receiving the puck from
freshman Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village, CO), Buvinow skated in
towards the net and beat Leclerc to the left side. Freshman Massimo
Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) also assisted.
Lamacchia and Buvinow combined for the Bears' second goal just 2:05
into the second period. Jacobson started the play when he passed
from the left corner up to Buvinow at the near point. Buvinow fired
a shot on net that Leclerc saved. However, the rebound bounced
right to Lamacchia at the far post, and he one-timed the puck in
for a 2-0 lead.
The Bears continued to dominate throughout the remainder of the
second period and the entire third, building a 51-20 advantage in
shots for the game. However, despite several close chances and some
quality saves by Leclerc, the Bears could not capitalize, as the
score remained, 2-0, through the final whistle.
Senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) played the entire game and
finished with 20 saves, while Leclerc stopped 49 in 59:55 for the
Warriors.
Brown returns to action next Friday when it faces Dartmouth in a
7:00 p.m. contest as part of the Ivy Showcase. The Bears then meet
Princeton on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Both games count in the overall
record but not in ECAC Hockey or Ivy League
standings.
