Union Rolls Over RIT
ROCHESTER, NY – Junior forward Jeremy Welsh had two goals
and one assist and sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick made 23
saves for his first career shutout to lead the Union College men's
ice hockey team to a 5-0 victory over RIT (1-2-1) in front of 2,100
fans at Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena.
The Dutchmen (2-0-3) scored on their first shot of the game on an
impressive individual effort by junior forward Wayne Simpson.
Simpson intercepted a pass up the wall and skated into the
offensive zone on a three-on-one, firing a shot over the shoulder
of Ruby to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds into the
contest.
Union would score the first of three power play goals in the period
just over five minutes later, with RIT's Brad McGowan in the
penalty box for cross checking. A rebound off an initial shot from
sophomore forward Josh Jooris bounced to sophomore defenseman Mat
Bodie. Bodie passed cross-ice to Welsh, who shot a one-timer past
Ruby at 5:36 to put Union up 2-0.
At 15:08, senior forward Kelly Zajac scored a rebound off a Shayne
Gostisbehere shot from the point that deflected off the leg of
junior forward Kyle Bodie and right to Zajac's stick.
Welsh would score his second of the period in the final seconds of
a 5-on-3 power play, as Bodie picked up another assist on a cross
ice pass to set up the goal at 19:46.
Both teams had multiple power play opportunities in the second
period, but a goal line save and a hit post prevented both teams
from scoring late in the frame.
With sophomore forward Daniel Carr in the penalty box for high
sticking, RIT's Chris Haltigin fired a shot from straightaway that
beat Grosenick between the pads, but Zajac swept the puck away
before it crossed the goal line to help Union maintain its
lead.
Welsh made a bid for his second hat trick of the season with under
a minute to play in the period, firing a shot off the right post at
the 19:40 mark.
Sophomore forward Josh Jooris gave Union a 5-0 lead at 5:30 of the
third period, scoring on a wrap-around after linemate Daniel Carr
worked to free the puck behind the net.
For the game, Union outshot RIT 44-23 and went three-of-seven on
the power play. Union will take on New Hampshire in Durham, NH next
Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
