Quinnipiac Falls to No. 18 Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team lost
to No. 18 Colgate, 3-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Starr Rink.
With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 7-5-2 overall and 1-3-2 in ECAC
Hockey action while Colgate improves to 7-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in
ECAC Hockey.
Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) scored the Bobcats only
goal of the game with assists going to John Dunbar (Calgary,
Alberta) and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia). Quinnipiac
goalie Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) stopped 23 shots in
the loss. Colgate's Austin Smith had a hat trick to lead the
Raiders to the two-goal win, while Chris Wagner assisted on all
three of Smith's goals.
Connor Jones put Quinnipiac on the board with a little more than
four minutes to play in the first period. Kellen Jones sent the
puck over to Dunbar who found Connor behind the Colgate goal.
Connor walked the puck out to the left of Raiders' goalie Alex Evin
and fired a shot over his shoulder to give Quinnipiac a one-goal
lead. The assist was Dunbar's fourth of the year while Kellen also
picks up his eighth of the season.
Austin Smith scored twice to give Colgate a 2-1 lead, scoring in
the last two minutes of both the first and second periods. With
1:35 remaining in the first period, Smith one-time a pass from
Jeremy Price from the slot to tie the game. Price and Chris Wagner
were both credited with assists on the play. Smith then potted his
second goal of the game with 1:50 to play in the second period. The
senior wing skated the puck below the left face-off circle and
tucked the puck just inside the left post to give Colgate a 2-1
lead heading into the second intermission. Wagner was credited with
his second assist of the night, while Spiro Goulakos also picked up
a point.
Smith added an empty-net goal for his third of the night with 1:18
left in regulation. Wagner also picked up his third assist on the
play.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 19 when it travels
to Ithaca, N.Y. to face Cornell at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink. The
Bobcats return home on Saturday, Nov. 26 when it hosts UMass at
3:30 p.m. in a game that can be viewed live on the New England
Sports Network (NESN).
