Iles Earns First Collegiate Shutout

ITHACA, N.Y. – Sophomore goalie Andy Iles made 15 saves for his first collegiate shutout and the Cornell men’s hockey team used three goals in a span of five minutes in the third period to pull away for a 4-0 victory over Princeton on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Lynah Rink. It was the third consecutive win for the Big Red, which is ranked 18th in the country in the most recent USCHO.com poll.

Iles needed to just two saves in the third period to wrap up his first shutout in his 24th career start.

Freshman Brian Ferlin stayed hot by netting his fourth goal of the young season 11:29 into the contest. Junior forward John Esposito chipped the puck deep into Tigers territory to the right of Princeton goalie Sean Bonar. Junior forward Greg Miller tracked down the puck along the endboards and wheeled a pass toward Esposito crashing toward the near post, but the puck caromed off a defender’s skate and across the slot. Ferlin beat Bonar with a shot along the ice to give the Big Red the lead. Miller has points in all six Cornell games so far, while Ferlin pushed his point streak to five games.

Both teams struggled on the power play on the night, going a combined 0-for-9. Specifically, the Big Red couldn’t capitalize on its three chances on the man advantage in the second period, leaving the lead at one goal entering the final period.

That’s when Cornell (4-2, 4-1 ECAC Hockey) rattled off the clinching goals, starting with freshman defenseman Joakim Ryan’s fourth strike of the season. The goal was unassisted, as Ryan collected a Princeton clearing attempt at the right point and sent a shot through traffic that beat Bonar high to the glove side at the 5:52 mark.

Sophomore forward Dustin Mowrey extended the lead to three on a three-on-two rush at 9:26. Freshman forward Cole Bardreau sent a shot toward goal on the left side that deflected between Bonar’s legs and off the near post. The puck ricocheted across the crease to Mowrey, who flipped in the rebound for his first goal of the campaign.

Just 68 seconds later, senior forward Sean Collins wrapped up the scoring with his second goal of the year. Junior defenseman Nick D’Agostino started the play with a quick transition pass at his own blue line to freshman forward Joel Lowry. Lowry then found Collins, who beat Bonar high to put a cap on the outburst.

While Iles made 15 saves, the Big Red defense also blocked 11 shots on the night.

Cornell is back in action on Saturday night when it hosts Quinnipiac at Lynah Rink. Face off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
