Carr's Hat Trick Helps Union Earn Win at RPI
TROY, NY – Sophomore forward Daniel Carr recorded
his second career hat trick and classmate Josh Jooris added three
assists to help lead Union (6-3-3, 3-2-0 ECAC Hockey) to a 5-1 win
over RPI (2-10-0, 1-4-0 ECAC Hockey) in front of 3,533 fans at
Houston Field House.
Carr's empty net goal at 17:45 gave him three goals on the night,
one in each period of play.
Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick made 21 saves, as the Dutchmen
outshout RPI 30-22 for the contest.
The Engineers got off to a fast start, scoring on their first power
play opportunity of the contest. With Union's Josh Jooris in the
penalty box for hitting from behind, RPI's Nick Bailen took a pass
from Jacob Laliberte and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of
sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick to give RPI a 1-0 lead at
5:34.
Union answered at even strength minutes later after a great
defensive play by sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie. RPI's Alex
Anders-Goulet appeared to have a breakaway before Bodie dove and
knocked the puck away with his stick.
On the ensuing rush up ice, sophomore forward Daniel Carr forced a
turnover at the blueline, setting up a 2-on-1 with senior forward
Kelly Zajac. Carr fed a cross-ice pass to Zajac, who finished the
play at 8:32 to tie the game at 1-1.
Union then capitalized on its first power play opportunity of the
contest to take the early lead. An interference call put RPI's Nick
Bailen in the penalty box at 12:06, and Union controlled possession
off the faceoff. Sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie fired around the
net to sophomore forward Josh Jooris. Jooris skated out in front of
the net and chipped the puck across the crease to Carr, who beat
RPI goaltender Brice Merriam at 12:49 to snap an 0-for-12 streak on
the power play and give the Dutchmen a 2-1 lead.
Union stretched its lead on a 4-on-4 opportunity early in the
second period. Freshman forward Max Novak had an open net in the
slot and fired high, but classmate Shayne Gostisbehere fed Welsh,
who fired a fluttering puck past Merriam at 5:29.
The Dutchmen took advantage of another power play when RPI's Marty
O'Grady was called for boarding at 7:33. Mat Bodie fired a long
wrist shot on net, and Carr deflected the puck past Merriam for his
second goal of the game at 9:13.
Union will take on nationally-ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor on Nov.
27 in its next contest.
