Clarkson Sweeps Sacred Heart
Senior Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT) continued his early season
offensive outburst with two more goals on Saturday night as the
Clarkson University Hockey team completed the weekend sweep of
Sacred Heart with a 5-2 victory before 2,656 fans at Cheel
Arena.
Oakley, who also scored twice in Friday’s 3-0 win over the
Pioneers, has recorded at least one point in each of the first four
games and has five goals and one assist to start his final
collegiate campaign.
The Golden Knights improve to 2-1-1, while Sacred Heart falls to
0-4-0. Clarkson completes a four-game home stand next weekend with
a two-game series against American International.
In a wild first period on Saturday with two significant momentum
swings, Clarkson came out on top with a 3-2 lead after the opening
20 minutes.
The Knights controlled the play early and tallied three times in
the first 11 minutes. A pair of goals 31 seconds apart in the
opening three minutes got Clarkson started. Just 15 seconds into
the first power play of the game, sophomore Ben Sexton (Kanata,
ONT) connected for his first goal of the season, finishing off
assists from classmate Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) and freshman
defenseman Sam Labrecque (Granby, QUE) in front at 2:26.
Senior Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) followed with his first goal
of the year at 2:57 when he slipped in a shot from the slot.
Sophomore Will Frederick (Allison Park, PA) and senior Jake Morley
(Ogdensburg, NY) assisted.
Oakley scored his first of the game when he ripped a shot from the
right circle at 10:53, giving the Green and Gold a seemingly
comfortable 3-0 lead. Freshman Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) and
senior Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) assisted.
Sacred Heart battled back and made it a one-goal game after 20
minutes. Neil Fachini scored the first goal of the season for the
Pioneers, jamming in a shot at the top of the crease at 11:21.
Sacred Heart came right back and scored again at 14:59. While
killing a penalty, the Pioneers forced a turnover at center ice,
and Drew George and Matt Gingera broke in on a 2-on-1.
Gingera’s initial shot missed the net, but George gathered in
the loose puck along the end boards and pass back to Gingera who
scored into a wide open goal for a shorthanded marker.
Clarkson regained some of its momentum back in the middle frame and
capitalized on a five minute major penalty to Sacred Heart. Senior
Julien Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) one-timed a pass from junior
defenseman Andrew Himelson (Monroe, NY) at the right circle,
connecting for his third goal of the season at 7:56 to give the
Knights a 4-2 lead through two periods.
Oakley completed the scoring with his second goal on a quick shot
in front under the crossbar after a pass from behind the net from
McPherson for a power-play marker at 14:23 of the third. Sexton
also assisted.
Clarkson held a slight advantage in shots, 29-28, but was strong in
specialty teams play, going 3-of-7 on the power play while killing
off all eight of the Pioneers' man-advantage chances.
Senior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) made 26 saves in the
win.
