Clarkson Wins Home Opener
For the second consecutive season, the Clarkson University
Hockey team recorded a shutout in its home opener as the Golden
Knights won their first game of the year with a 3-0 victory over
Sacred Heart before 2,525 fans at Cheel Arena Friday night. Senior
Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) gained the whitewash with 23
saves and classmate Louke Oakley (Whitby, ONT) continued his
early-season offensive spurt with two goals.
Clarkson, which stands at 1-1-1 overall, host Sacred Heart (0-3-0)
again on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
Clarkson started strong in all areas of its game to begin its
home-opener in Potsdam, NY, recording a power-play marker, a
shorthanded tally and an even-strength goal to take a 3-0 lead
through the first period.
Oakley started the scoring at 4:07, redirecting a shot from the
point by freshman defenseman Sam Labrecque (Granby, QUE) just 18
seconds into the first power play of the game. Sophomore Ben Sexton
(Kanata, ONT) also assisted.
Freshman defenseman Kevin Tansey (Hammond, ONT) made it 2-0,
scoring on a quick shot from the top of the left circle for his
first career goal, a shorthanded marker at 13:12. Sophomore Jarrett
Burton (Echo Bay, ONT) won the draw back to Tansey to earn the
assist.
With 1:27 remaining in the opening stanza, Oakley won a faceoff
clean at the right side of the Sacred Heart goal and fired in a
quick shot under the crossbar for his second goal of the game and
third of the season, completing the scoring in the game.
The Knights outshot Sacred Heart 31-23. Clarkson was 1-of-4 on
the power play and killed off six Pioneer man-advantage
opportunities while also scoring a shorthanded goal.
Karpowich earned his third career shutout with six saves in the
first period, 10 more in the middle frame and seven third-period
stops. Karpowich’s best stop came on a second-period pad save
on the Pioneers’ Drew George, who got behind the Clarkson
defense for breakaway chance with nine minutes left in
the second. Sacred Heart put strong offensive pressure on the
Knights’ goal in the final seconds of the game in their bid
to score their first goal of the season, but Karpowich was able to
hold the visitors off the scoreboard.
