Michigan Handles St. Lawrence
A game that started well for St. Lawrence University's men's
hockey team did not end well as the University of Michigan shrugged
off a 1-0 Saint lead with three goals in a span of 3:16 of the
third period and went on to a 10-3 win over the Saints at Yost
Arena in Ann Arbor Thursday night.
The Wolverines, ranked fourth in one national poll and fifth in
another, carried a 3-0 home record into Thursday's game and a
seven-game win streak against the Saints. Michigan, which has won a
team record 16-straight home games, has not lost to the Saints
since a 6-5 decision in Canton in 1959. Michigan added to its
streaks with an impressive offensive performance, improving to
4-0-0 on the season and handing the Saints their third straight
loss.
While the Saints had the early lead in the game when freshman Tommy
Thompson scored his first collegiate goal off a one-timer on a
cross-crease pass by classmate Justin Bruckel with Mark Armstrong
also assisting 7:49 into the game, Michigan's three goal
flurry late in the first period was a harbinger of what was to come
as the Wolverines swarmed the Saint defense steadily pulled away
for the victory.
"It was a painful lesson for us," said associate head coach Mike
Hurlbut. "Michigan is obviously a great team and when they start
rolling they are hard to stop, but we need to do a lot better
defensively. The effort was there, but we still have a lot to work
on."
Senior Luke Glendening tied the game for the Wolverines with the
first of his three goals in the contest and started the late first
period flurry with a rebound goal against Saint starter Matt
Weninger at 15:33. Sophomore Luke Moffatt cut in tight and put one
on the backhand between Weninger and the post at 16:16 to give
Michigan the lead and junior AJ Treais made it a 3-1 game when his
shot along the ice beat Weninger on the stick side at 18:49.
Glendening scored his second on a one-timer while wide open in
front of Weninger 2:04 into the second, but the Saints got back
into contention two minutes later when Kyle Flanagan scored the
first of his two in the game as he tucked a power play rebound off
a shot by George Hughes past Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick with
Chris Martin also assisting to make it 4-2 at 4:04.
The Wolverines made it a 5-2 game just over two minutes after that
as defenseman Greg Pateryn chased Weninger with his second of the
season and Robby Moss was greeted by a goal from defenseman Lee
Moffie, who pounced on a Saint turnover, walked down the slot and
scored at 13:33 to make it 6-2. Glendening completed his hat trick
when wing David Wohlberg caught up to a long lead pass, flipped the
puck back through the crease off Moss' pads and Glendening was all
alone in front to tuck it in at 13:50.
Flanagan scored his second of the night when he tucked the puck
behind Hunwick from Hughes on a five-on-three power play with 15
seconds left in the second period, but Michigan put it away when
freshman Phil DiGuiseppe scored against Saint junior goaltender
David Grilk on a two-on-one at 7:02. Junior Lindsay Sparks
rifled a shot under the crossbar from the top of the left faceoff
circle at 8:36 and Wohlberg completed the scoring with his second
of the year on a point blank tuck in with 1:55 to play for the 10-3
final.
Weninger finished with 11 saves, Moss made six and Grilk seven for
the Saints while Hunwick stopped 27 before giving way to Adam
Janeczyk, who made two saves in the final 9:30.
The Saints will look for their first win of the season when they
play RIT at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester on Saturday.
