Rensselaer Earns Shutout Victory Over Brown
TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Ryan Haggerty scored the
game’s only goal late in the second period to lead the
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s hockey team
to a, 1-0, victory over Brown University, this evening, in
ECAC Hockey play at the Houston Field House. With the win, the
Engineers improve to 2-9-0 overall (1-3-0 ECACH), while the
Bears drop to 3-3-0 (2-2-0 ECACH).
Haggerty (Stamford, CT/U.S. National Dev. Team) put the hosts on
the board at 19:39 of the second on a one-timer goal from the
left circle. Classmate Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall
Colts) worked the puck back to the right point for junior Nick
Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice), who found Haggerty all
alone for the power-play tally.
A back and forth third period saw both teams come up with chances
to find the net, but both goaltenders were equal to the task.
The Engineers finished with a slight, 6-5 edge in shots in the
frame, for a 23-22 advantage in the game.
Brown’s best chance of the third period came on a shot by
sophomore left defenseman Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John,
BC/Salisbury School), midway through the frame. His slap shot
from the point was ripped of the left pipe and out.
RPI junior netminder Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park,
PA/Topeka RoadRunners) earned the shutout, making 22 saves,
including 10 in the first period. Bears’ senior goalie
Michael Clemente (Great Falls, VA) took the tough-luck loss,
finishing with 22 stops at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers return to the ice on Tuesday, when they host
area-rival and ninth-ranked Union College at the Houston Field
House (7pm). Brown visits Army for a non-league affair next
Saturday (7pm).
