CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Steve Michalek made 30 saves for his
first career win and four different Crimson players scored goals as
the Harvard men’s hockey team downed No. 18 Colgate, 4-2, for
its first win of the season in a wild game before 2,305 fans
Saturday night at Bright Hockey Center.
Freshmen Patrick McNally and Colin Blackwell scored their first
career goals for the Crimson (1-2-1, 1-2-1 ECAC Hockey), while
Rence Coassin and Alex Killorn also found the net. Harvard scored
two power-play goals, and Colgate (6-4-1, 2-2-0) netted one while
getting 29 saves from Eric Mihalik.
Dan Ford and David Valek each notched two assists, and Michalek
registered his first career point with a helper. Valek and Max
Everson each blocked three Colgate shots, while Colin Moore went
7-2 at the faceoff dot. The Crimson outshot the Raiders, 33-32.
With a first-period goal from Robbie Bourdon, Colgate held a
one-goal lead heading into a wild second period that featured four
goals, three major penalties and 57 combined penalty minutes.
Coassin tied the score at 1-1 about four minutes into the period
with a shot from the right side after Patrick McNally’s shot
was blocked.
That’s when the penalties picked up. Austin Smith banged in a
goal at the 5:24 mark with Harvard down to three skaters after a
minor penalty followed by a major. The Crimson, however, killed off
the final four minutes of the major while playing without top
defenseman Danny Biega.
The Raiders were whistled for two major penalties later in the
frame, including a facemasking call that led to a game
disqualification for Nick Prokow, and Harvard took advantage.
McNally scored from the top of the circles to tie the game,
shooting through a Blackwell screen after passes from Killorn and
Eric Kroshus.
Killorn put Harvard on top at 17:51 of the third. Michalek left the
puck in the corner of the defensive zone for Ford, and the
defenseman picked it up, circled behind the net and sent a breakout
pass to Killorn. The senior streaked down the left side and snuck a
shot through Mihalik for a 3-2 lead heading into the final
period.
Blackwell’s tally came in the first three minutes of the
third period. Ford sent the puck up the wall, and Valek deflected
it ahead to Blackwell. The rookie sped around the defense wide on
the right side and lifted a shot over Mihalik’s shoulder, off
two posts and into the goal.
Mihalik made several big saves to keep Colgate close, despite a
14-6 edge in second-period shots for Harvard and a Crimson barrage
in the Colgate end early in the third. Michalek, who earlier
stopped 12 of the Raiders’ 13 power-play shots, responded by
keeping Colgate off the board despite 12 third-period shots. The
freshman made a number of outstanding saves and did not allow a
goal in the game’s final 34 minutes.
