Brown Rallies For Win Over No. 9 Union
SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore forward Daniel Carr scored
early in the first period, but Brown (3-2-0, 2-1-0 ECAC Hockey)
rallied for two scores later in the frame and held on for 2-1 win
over Union (5-2-3, 2-1-0 ECAC Hockey) in front of 1,633 fans at
Messa Rink.
Freshman goaltender Colin Stevens (1-1-0) stopped 21 of 23 shots,
while Brown’s Matt Clemente stopped 24 of 25 shots to improve
to 3-2-0 on the year.
Brown went 1-of-3 with the man advantage, while the Dutchmen
finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play, including two third
period chances. Union’s best scoring chance came on the
second power play of the frame late in the game, with Brown’s
Dennis Robertson in the penalty box for roughing at 13:15.
With about six minutes to play, sophomore defenseman Mat Bodie
corralled a loose puck in the high slot and fired a hard wrist off
the shoulder of Clemente and over the net. In the final minute,
with Stevens out of the net, Carr and junior forward Wayne Simpson
both had shots turned away by Clemente.
Union got off to a quick start, scoring on its first shift of the
game. Wayne Simpson controlled the puck along half boards and fed
down low to senior forward Kelly Zajac. Zajac passed to Carr, who
fired a one-timer past Mike Clemente to put the Dutchmen up 1-0
just 32 seconds into the contest.
Brown scored twice late in the period to take the lead for good.
After a failed breakout attempt by Union, Mike Wolff fired a shot
from point that was stopped by Colin Stevens. Stevens stopped the
initial rebound by Bobby Farnham, but Jack Maclellan scored from
just outside the crease at 16:02.
Maclellan struck again on the power play with time winding down in
the opening period. With senior forward Brian Yanovitch in the
penalty box for interference, the Bears controlled in the Union
zone. Matt Wahl fed Maclellan in the circle, who kicked the puck to
his forehand and fired a wrist shot high over the glove of Stevens
at 19:57 to give Brown a 2-1 lead.
Union’s best chance to tie game came early in the second
period, with Mat Bodie in the penalty box for cross checking.
Sophomore forward Matt Hatch poked the puck behind the Brown
defense, setting up a shorthanded breakaway chance. Hatch’s
low shot was stopped by Clemente, who closed up his pads in time to
make the save at 3:12 of the second period.
Union will take on No. 10/13 Yale (3-1-1, 2-1-0 ECAC Hockey)
tomorrow night at Messa Rink in a game that begins at 7:30 p.m.
