Brown Upends Union at Messa Rink
SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, ALB)
scored a pair of goals 3:55 apart during the last four minutes of
the first period to help erase an early 1-0 deficit and lead the
Brown men's hockey team (3-2-0, 2-1-0) to a 2-1 win over #9 Union
(5-2-3, 2-1-0) on Friday evening at Union's Messa Rink.
"We talked about getting off to a good start," said head coach
Brendan Whittet '94. "It was anything but. They were taking it to
us pretty good and they had us running around. It's hard when you
give up a goal 15 seconds in. As that period wore on, I thought we
got better. We started winning some battles. The positive was we
come out leading 2-1, despite getting outplayed early. I thought we
got better as the game wore on."
The Dutchmen took a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds after the opening
faceoff, as Daniel Carr collected the puck from Kelly Zajac on a
feed from behind the cage, and knocked it past senior Mike Clemente
(Great Falls, VA) from the slot for his second goal of the
year.
The Bears had their first chance of the period with just about
eight minutes left when junior Richie Crowley (Canton, MA) sent the
puck into the zone for sophomore Michael Juola (Lake Forest, CA) on
the right wing. Juola wristed a shot from the top of the right
circle that beat Union's Colin Stevens, but clanged off the near
post, keeping Brown off the board.
Then, on their next good chance of the frame, Maclellan put away
the third chance after Stevens saved shots by seniors Mike Wolff
(Walpole, MA) and Bobby Farnham (North Andover, MA).
Brown earned its first power play chance with 58 seconds left in
the period and Maclellan gave the Bears a 2-1 lead with his second
of the night, scoring a beautiful goal from the left faceoff circle
with 2.8 seconds remaining in the period.
Maclellan skated into the zone on the right side and headed for
the left wing, stick-handling through the Union defense, before
sending the puck up to sophomore Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) at the
blueline. Wahl passed back to Maclellan at the left faceoff circle
and he fired a wrist-shot over Stevens' glove.
Brown went up on its second man-advantage of the game 1:36 into
the second period and freshman Ryan Jacobson (Greenwood Village,
CO) nearly scored the Bears' third of the night with 45 seconds
left on the power play. However, Stevens made a quick reaction save
on Jacobson's one-timer from the edge of the crease on a centering
feed by Maclellan.
Just 20 seconds later, Union's Matt Hatch raced in on a
short-handed breakaway with sophomore Dennis Robertson (Fort St.
John, BC) trailing, but Clemente made the save to hold onto the 2-1
lead for Brown.
Stevens saved another attempt by the Bears to push the lead to two
goals, picking up a lose puck in the crease just before senior
Jarred Smith (Pepper Pike, OH) could get to it to knock it into a
partially open net.
The Dutchmen opened the final period with 1:42 left on their third
power play chance of the night and had another power play chance
with seven minutes left in the period, but the Bears' penalty-kill
was up to the task, keeping Union off the board in both
chances.
Union pulled Stevens with 1:07 remaining in the period in favor of
the extra attacker, but the Bears were able to hold on for the win,
their second straight. Clemente, who finished with 24 saves, made a
huge stop on a shot from Carr with just .8 seconds left, helping to
preserve the win.
The Bears return to action tomorrow evening, Saturday, November
12th, when they travel to RPI to face the Engineers at 7:00
p.m.
