Union Earns Win Over RPI at Festivus Faceoff in Lake Placid
LAKE PLACID, NY – Junior forward Jeremy Welsh extended his
goal-scoring streak to five games to help No. 9/10 Union (8-3-5,
3-2-2 ECAC Hockey) earn a 5-2 non-conference win over RPI (3-13-0,
1-6-0 ECAC Hockey) in the Festivus Faceoff at Herb Brooks Arena in
Lake Placid, NY.
The Dutchmen scored three unanswered goals in the second and third
periods to take control of a game that was tied a 2-2 late in the
second period.
Junior forward Wayne Simpson broke the tie shortly after RPI 's
Alex Angers-Goulet was called for boarding at 14:54 of the second
period with Guy Lebouf already in the penalty box serving a double
minor for checking from behind and unsportsmanlike conduct.
On the ensuing 5-on-3 Simpson took a pass from Mat Bodie and fired
a wrist shot over the glove of RPI goaltender Bryce Merriam (27
saves) to put the Dutchmen up 3-2. Union finished the night 1-for-8
on the power play.
Freshman defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scored his first
collegiate goal just over two minutes later, firing a slap shot
through traffic past Merriam at 18:29.
With Union up 4-2 in the third period, the Dutchmen killed off two
penalties at the start of the frame to maintain their lead.
Sophomore goaltender Troy Grosenick (23 saves) made perhaps his
best stop of the night at 5:57 of the third period with sophomore
defenseman Mat Bodie in the penalty box for interference. Grosenick
smothered a shot from RPI's Mike Bergin, who cut in from the point
for a point-blank opportunity from the slot. RPI finished the night
0-for-5 on the man advantage
Sophomore forward Daniel Carr scored at 11:11 of the third period,
firing straight across the goal line from the corner, off RPI's
Nick Bailen and into the net to put the Dutchmen up 5-2.
RPI took an early lead in the first period just after their first
power play of the game expired. RPI's Jacob Laliberte fired a shot
from straightway that CJ Lee tipped past Grosenick, giving the
Engineers a 1-0 lead at 8:38.
Union's Matt Hatch evened the game at 15:03 on a breakaway set up
by freshman forward Mark Bennett. Bennett passed down the middle of
the ice behind the RPI defense to Hatch, who finished with a
backhand shot past Merriam.
Welsh gave Union its first lead of the night with his team-leading
12th goal of the season, beating Merriam with a wrist shot at 4:08.
RPI's Mark McGowan evened the score at 2-2 with a rebound goal at
6:55.
The Dutchmen will take on No. 5 Merrimack next Saturday at 4:00
p.m. at Lawler Arena in North Andover, MA.
