Yale Earns Weekend Split
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Jeff Malcolm (Lethbridge, AB)
registered his first career shutout while stopping 39 shots and
Clinton Bourbonais (Colchester, Conn.) had a goal and an assist as
the No. 9 Yale men’s hockey team beat No. 18 Colgate 2-0
before packed house at Ingalls Rink.
The Bulldogs (2-1-1, 1-1-0) were outshot 39-22, but Malcolm stopped
13 in the first, 15 in the second and 11 in the third to get his
squad two ECAC Hockey points and split the conference weekend. His
39 saves were the most by a Bulldog netminder since Ryan Rondeau
’11 had 40 on Halloween 2009.
“He was solid tonight and he came out to the top of the
crease well,” said Keith Allain ’80, Yale’s
Malcolm G. Chace Head Coach of his goalie. “He controlled the
rebounds and gave us just what we needed tonight.”
Antoine Laganiere had the other Eli tally that helped send the
Raiders (5-3-1, 1-1-0) back to Hamilton with a weekend split.
Colgate had a 13-11 edge in shots over the opening 20 minutes, but
the home team had more quality opportunities. If not for some
quick moves by Eric Mihalik (10 saves), the Elis could have had
much more than a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Bulldogs took advantage of their second power play chance to
get the lead. Freshman Nicholas Weberg (Oslo, Norway) moved the
puck to Bourbonais along the boards. Bourbonais skated out to the
right circle and found an opening to get off a low shot that junior
Antoine Laganiere (Ile Cadieux, Que.) re-directed past the Raider
netminder. The puck trickled over the goal line inside the far post
at 11:57. It was Yale’s initial first-period goal this
season.
If you didn’t watch the second period and only looked at the
stats for the scoreless frame, you would have thought the Raiders
dominated with 15 of the 19 shots on goal. However, the Blue
mis-fired on 16 attempts and had equal pressure on Mihalik, who
finished with 20 saves. Malcolm took care of business in his end on
some scary situations including a quick hand on a Chris Wagner
blast.
“I was pretty confident and the guys did a great job in front
of me. They kept the shots on the outside,” said Malcolm.
“The defense got back on pucks well.”
Meanwhile, Yale sophomore Kenny Agostino (Flanders, NJ) was getting
all kinds of chances and came very close to finding the net for the
first time this year two of three times. Teammate Kevin Limbert
(Fruitvale, BC) had a breakaway late in the period and missed wide
on a backhander.
To put in perspective how little the shots on goal totals meant to
the game, consider that the Blue took 44 shots over the first 40
minutes with 15 on target and three off pipes.
“We had better scoring chances than they did but we missed
the net a lot. I think we were the better team tonight,” said
Allain.
Yale finally upped the margin to two goals at 12:27 of the third
when junior Josh Balch (Wilmette, Ill.) cashed in his aggressive
forecheck for an assist on a big tally. Balch grabbed a Colgate
drop pass behind the net and quickly found Bourbonais in the left
circle. Bourbonais, the only Bulldog with two points tonight,
immediately fired inside the far post for his first goal of the
year.
“We had a good forecheck going and I got a nice feed from
Josh Balch. It was great to get the monkey off my back,” said
Bourbonais.
