Pair of Short Handed Goals Lift Colgate Past Brown
PROVIDENCE, RI – 18th-ranked Colgate (5-2-1, 1-0-0)
capitalized on two Brown mistakes with Austin Smith scoring a pair
of short-handed goals, as the Raiders earned a 5-3 win over the
Bears (1-2-0, 0-1-0) in the 2011-12 home opener for the Bears
Friday evening at Meehan Auditorium.
The two teams traded a pair of power play opportunities early in
the game 1:53 apart and after killing the Raiders first chance, the
Bears were victimized by Colgate’s penalty kill, as Austin
Smith netted a short-handed goal just 6:35 into the game to give
the visitors a 1-0 lead.
After freshman Kyle Quick (Buffalo, NY) failed the keep the puck in
at the blueline, the Raiders raced in on a two-on-one. Sophomore
Matt Wahl (Wellington, FL) left Smith in the middle to take the
puck, but Spiro Goulakos dished the puck to Smith in the slot and
he beat senior Mike Clemente (Great Falls, VA) stick-side high for
the early lead.
Brown had another chance on the man-advantage with five minutes
left in the period and sophomore Dennis Robertson (Fort St. John,
BC) nearly beat Eric Mihalik with a blast from the blueline. But
his shot clanged off the right post and into the corner, as the
Raiders were able to kill another penalty.
Brown utilized three straight penalties on the Raiders in a span of
1:32 early in the second period to take a 2-1 lead at the 4:14
mark. With Nathan Sinz and Austin Mayer already in the box for two
tripping calls 63 seconds apart, and a delayed penalty call coming
up on Spiro Goulakos, Clemente left the net in favor of the extra
attacker, giving Brown a six-on-three advantage. Senior Jack
Maclellan (Calgary, ALB) used just seven seconds of the
three-player advantage to tie the game at 1-1, as he beat Mihalik
with a shot from high in the slot for his first of the year just
three minutes into the period.
The goal counted against Sinz’s penalty, but Goulakos headed
to the box for another five-on-three. Just 1:14 into the two-man
advantage, freshman Massimo Lamacchia (Maple, ONT) took a pass from
Wahl at the left faceoff circle and one-timed it to the near side,
hitting the top of the net for his second goal in as many
games.
The lead was short-lived however, as Kevin McNamara would tie the
score at 2-2 at the 7:48 mark, striking for his first of the season
just as Colgate’s second power play chance of the game had
expired. Though it did not count as a power play goal in the
official stat sheet, the puck was in the net before Brown’s
Mike Juola (Lake Forest, CA) had one foot on the ice.
Colgate grabbed a 3-2 lead with 1:11 left in the period when Jeremy
Price fired a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle
that beat Clemente top-shelf and knocked the water bottle up into
the air with the Raiders on a two-man advantage.
Brown tied the game 6:25 into the third period on the first career
goal for junior Jeff Ryan (Media, PA). Junior Chris Zaires
(Aberdeen, NJ) started the play when he fired the puck on net from
the right point. Mihalik couldn’t corral the rebound and it
went to freshman Matt Harlow (Bridgewater, MA), who pushed it
across the crease. Ryan skated around the back of the net and
back-handed the puck up and over Mihalik to tie the score at
3-3.
The Bears had back-to-back power play chances with under six
minutes to play, but Smith collected his second short-handed goal
of the night with 4:35 remaining to give the Raiders a 4-3 lead.
Senior Jeff Buvinow (Turnersville, NJ) had the puck along the right
wing and passed it back to Robertson at the center of the blueline.
The puck bounced off Robertson’s stick and right to Smith,
who left it for himself, before beating Clemente on a one-on-one
for the game-winner. Brown pulled
Clemente with 1:06 remaining for the extra attacker, but Chris
Wagner intercepted another Brown pass at the blueline and walked
the puck into the open net for the 5-3 final.
In all, Brown outshot Colgate, 36-25, including a 15-5 margin in
the third period. The Bears were 2-8 on the power play, while
Colgate was 1-7. Clemente finished with 20 saves, while Mihalik
made 33 for the Raiders.
Brown returns to action tomorrow evening when it hosts Cornell in a
7:00 p.m. ECAC and Ivy League contest.
