Clarkson Earns Key Point with Tie at Cornell
With a 0-0 tie at 17th-ranked Cornell the Clarkson University
Hockey team earned a big point on the road in ECAC Hockey action at
Lynah Rink in Ithaca, NY on Saturday night as senior Paul Karpowich
(Thunder Bay, ONT) posted 32 saves.
The Golden Knights, who lost a tough 4-2 game at Colgate on Friday,
stand at 8-6-4 overall and is 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Knights
close out action before the upcoming exam/holiday break with two
games against arch-rival St. Lawrence this week. The Knights battle
the Saints in conference play in Canton on Tuesday and face off
against St. Lawrence in non-league action on Saturday in Lake
Placid.
In his return to his alma mater as a first-year head coach, Casey
Jones saw Clarkson play a discipline, defensive game against
Cornell. Karpowich backstopped the Green and Gold with another
solid effort between the pipes, making nine first-period saves,
11 in the middle frame, 11 more in the third and one stop in
the five-minute overtime session to record his fifth shutout of the
year and seventh of his career. Karpowich picked up his first
career shutout on January 31, 2009 with 27 saves in a 0-0 tie
against the Big Red at Cheel Arena.
Cornell (7-3-1, 6-1-1) outshot the Knights 32-23, but Clarkson had
the better of the play in overtime with a 3-1 shot margin. The Big
Red’s Andy Iles posted his fifth consecutive shutout at Lynah
with 23 saves, including 13 over the final 25 minutes.
Clarkson was 0-of-4 on the power play while the Big Red were 0-of-3
with the man-advantage.
