Quinnipiac Skated to Draw With No. 9 Union
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team
skated to a 2-2 tie with nationally-ranked No. 9/9 Union, in an
ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank
Sports Center. With the tie, Quinnipiac goes to 1-4-3 in ECAC
Hockey and 8-6-3 overall. Union draws its first tie in ECAC Hockey
play and currently stands at 3-2-1 in league play and 7-3-4
overall.
Defensive pairs Zach Tolkinen (Lino Lakes, Minn.) and Zach Davies
(Smithers, British Columbia) both scored on the power play in the
second period to stake the Bobcats to a 2-0 lead. In all, five
different Bobcats recorded points in the game as Yuri Bouharevich
(Montreal, Quebec), Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and
Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) all had assists.
Tolkinen put the Bobcats on the board with his second goal of the
season at the 4:23 mark of the second period. Barron dug the puck
out of the corner and found Bouharevich, who cycled the puck to
Tolkinen above the face-off circle to the left of Union goalie
Colin Stevens. Tolkinen looked a defender off and threw the puck on
net, finding the top left corner to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, it was Davies on the power play, with
his first goal of the season, to give Quinnipiac a 2-0 lead as
Zurevinski and Langlois were credited with assists.
Quinnipiac goalie Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was solid
all night in net as he stopped 35 of Union's 37 shots on goal.
Hartzell turned back the first 22 shots he saw on the evening
before Brian Yanovitch scored to put the Dutchmen on the board.
Kevin Sullivan and Greg Coburn were credited with assists on the
play as Yanovitch scored his second goal of the year at the 10:26
mark of the second period.
Jeremy Welsh tied the game just 2:27 into the final period when
Mark Bennett dug the puck out of the corner to Hartzell's left and
started skating up the boards. Welsh stopped just outside the
face-off circle and threw the puck on the net. It appeared that
Welsh intended to pass to Josh Jooris, who was open on the opposite
post, but the puck bounced off a skate in front of the net and was
re-directed past Hartzell to tie the game.
For the first time this season, Quinnipiac was out-shot in the game
as Union held a 37-33 advantage. With the tie, Hartzell goes to
3-3-3 on the season while Stevens goes to 1-1-2 after a 31-save
performance for the Dutchmen's goalie.
Quinnipiac returns to play on Saturday, Dec. 3 when it hosts
Rensselaer at 7 p.m. at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank
Sports Center.
