Quinnipiac Opens League Play with Win Against Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University men's ice
hockey team defeated Princeton, 5-2, at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink
to open the season at 1-0-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while they also
improve to 7-2-0 on the season. Princeton goes to 0-2-1 overall and
0-1-0 in league play. It was the Bobcats' first win at Hobey Baker
Rink since Nov. 21, 2007.
Five different Bobcats scored in Quinnipiac's win. Russell Goodman
(Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan), Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia), Bryce Van
Brabant (Morinville, Alberta) and Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal,
Quebec) all scored while Zurevinski also assisted on a goal in the
Bobcats win. Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) had two
assists in the game and goalie Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ontario)
improved to 5-1-0 on the season after stopping 25 of 27 shots on
goal.
Goodman put Quinnipiac on the board with his second goal of the
season with just under nine minutes to play in the first period.
After a stoppage in play, Connor Jones won the face-off to the
right of Princeton goalie Sean Bonar. Goodman received the puck in
the slot, skated across the crease and flipped a back-hand shot
past Bonar to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead. The assist was Jones'
eighth of the season.
Following a five-minute major penalty called against the Bobcats,
Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) scored a short-handed goal to
give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead. Zack Currie (Victoria, British
Columbia) poked the puck loose to Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario)
who skated below the left face-off circle before spinning and
lacing a pass to Zurevinski. Zurevinski's one-timer beat Bonar for
the senior captain's second goal of the season.
For Peca, the first-year Bobcat tallied a point in his eighth
straight game. The last Quinnipiac freshman to hold an eight-game
scoring streak was Brandon Wong during the 2006-07 season.
Kellen Jones scored his fourth goal of the season midway through
the second period. John Dunbar (Calgary, Alberta) started the play,
sending it to Jones who fed his twin brother. Kellen's blast from
the point beat Bonar, bar-down, and rattled in to give Quinnipiac a
three-goal lead.
Princeton's Will MacDonald scored with just under four minutes to
play to spell three unanswered goals by the Bobcats. MacDonald
picked up rebound off a deflection by Clarke (Belleville, Ontario)
off a shot by Eric Carlson and flipped it over the Bobcats' goalie
shoulder to pull the Tigers within two goals heading into the third
period.
Van Vabrant pushed Quinnipiac's lead to three goals with his second
of the season late in the third period. Zurevinski picked up the
puck deep in the Princeton zone and threw the puck on net. Bonar
deflected the puck, but Van Brabant was sitting just outside the
crease for the rebound to give Quinnipiac a 4-1 lead.
Eric Meland scored with just under seven minutes to play when he
was able to punch the puck under Clarke after a scrum in front of
the net. Rob Kleebaum picked up an assist on the play. Bouharevich
added an empty net goal for Quinnipiac in the final minute of
play.
