Weekend Update: Union Earns Key Win
ALBANY, N.Y. -- At No. 12/13 Union 3, No. 1/1 Yale
2: Senior forward Adam Presizniuk scored what proved
to be the deciding goal at 14:19 of the second period to lift No
12/13 Union to a historic 3-2 win over No. 1/1 Yale in front of
2,251 fans at Messa Rink. Union's win was the first in
program history over a team ranked No. 1 in the nation. Ryan
Rondeau stopped 31 of 34 shots and kept the Bulldogs in the
game. Keith Kinkaid, who made 28 saves overall, needed a
dozen in the final frame to hold on for the win as Yale outshot
Union 13-4. Kenny Agostino and Jimmy Martin were the two
Bulldogs who got pucks past Kinkaid. Both teams were 2-for-4
on the power-play.
At No. 10/10 Rensselaer 3, Brown 0: Junior
netminder Allen York stopped all 36 shots he faced and senior Tyler
Helfrich had a hand in all three goals as 10th-ranked Rensselaer
shut out Brown, 3-0, at the Houston Field House. With the
win, the Engineers improve to 16-6-3 overall and 8-5-0 in ECAC
Hockey play. The Bears fall to 7-9-4 (5-7-1). Forward
Chase Polacek netted his seventh game-winning goal on the season
with a first period power-play tally. Tyler Helfrich chipped
in with a goal and two helpers for the Engineers. York
(15-6-3) earned his second shutout of the season and fourth of his
career. Clemente (5-7-4) finished with 17 saves at the other end of
the ice. RPI scored on two of its first three power-plays,
before ending up 2 for 5. Brown was 0-for-5 on the
man-advantage.
At No. 18 Dartmouth 2, Cornell 2 (ot):
Freshman Andy Iles stopped 31 of the 33 shots he faced on the night
the Cornell picked up a 2-2 tie at Dartmouth Friday night in
Hanover, N.H. James Mello stopped 17 shots in goal for
Dartmouth, which is now 11-6-3 overall and 7-4-2 in league play.
Both teams finished the night scoreless in two power-play
chances. Joe Devin and Sean Collins scored goals for the Big
Red on the night. Connor Goggin notched the game tying goal
late in the third period as Rob Smith tallied the opening goal for
Dartmouth.
No. 19 Princeton 5 at St. Lawrence 3: Taylor
Fedun had two goals and an assist to help lead the 19th-ranked
Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-3 win at St. Lawrence on Friday
night at Appleton Arena. Princeton never trailed in the win
despite St. Lawrence twice cutting Princeton's lead to a single
goal. Mike Condon made 29 saves to backstop Princeton to the
win, while the Saints’ goalies,Matt Weninger and Robby Moss
combined for 23 saves. The Princeton special teams again
played well with the Tigers scoring while on the power play and
while shorthanded.
At Harvard 6, Colgate 2: Defenseman Danny
Biega scored three of Harvard's six goals as the Crimson scored in
the last minute of each period and defeated Colgate, 6-2, Friday
night at Bright Hockey Center. Alex Fallstrom, Alex Killorn
and Conor Morrison also scored for Harvard. Killorn, Michael
Biega, Marshall Everson and Chris Huxley each registered two
assists. Ryan Carroll picked up his first win of the season
stopping 27 shots for the Crimson. Harvard scored a
power-play goal for the third straight game and killed all three of
Colgate's power-plays, extending its streak of consecutive kills to
19. Colgate got goals from Robbie Bourdon and Francois
Brisebois. Rookie Eric Mihalik earned the start in net, but
was pulled after 30 minutes and three goals against. He made
10 saves in the game. Alex Evin replaced Mihalik and made
nine saves in the final 30 minutes, giving up one goal.
Colgate held a 29-25 advantage in shots.
Quinnipiac 3 at Clarkson 2: Quinnipiac
defeated Clarkson, 3-2, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Cheel Arena
in Potsdam, N.Y. Jeremy Langlois scored twice, with both
goals coming in the first period, to lead the Bobcats, who improve
to 6-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play and 13-10-3 overall. Clarkson
drops to 6-5-1 in league play and 13-10-2 overall. Quinnipiac
also extends its unbeaten streak when leading after the second
period to 59 games (54-0-5), the longest current streak in NCAA
Division I hockey. Quinnipiac out shot Clarkson 32-23,
including a 24-11 margin through the first 40 minutes. Paul
Karpowich finished with 29 stops. Eric Hartzell made 21 saves
for Quinnipiac. The Knights went 2-of-3 on the power-play and
killed off all five of the Bobcats’ man-advantage
chances.
