Weekend Update: Dartmouth Prevails in Top-20 Showdown
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Dartmouth won its second straight game over a
nationally-ranked opponent as it defeated No. 10/12 Union, 4-1 at
Messa Rink Friday evening. The victory was the fourth in a
row for the Big Green and marked the first home loss of the season
for the Dutchmen. Other highlights on the night included
top-ranked Yale, Brown and RPI gaining two league points, while
Colgate and Cornell picking-up one league point.
At No. 1/1 Yale 5, Clarkson 2: The
top-ranked Bulldogs a broke up a 2-2 tie midway through the third
period netting three straight goals to post a 5-2 win over visiting
Clarkson at The Whale. The nation’s top scoring offense
got two goals from Chris Cahill (2g, 1a) and other scores from
Brian O'Neill and Denny Kearney. Kevin Peel pitched in two
assists while Ryan Rondeau stopped 21 of 23 shots to help the Blue
improve to 16-2 -0 overall, 10-1-0 in ECAC Hockey, and remain atop
the conference standings. Yale outshot Clarkson 33-23 during
one of the most physical games of the season. The Golden
Knights' netminder Paul Karpowich made 28 saves and was the primary
reason the game was so close most of the way. Clarkson twice
overcame one-goal deficits against the top-rated Bulldogs, tying
the score 2-2 early in the third period on junior Julien
Cayer’s first goal of the season. The Golden Knights
finished 1-for-8 on the power-play and held Yale’s
high-scoring unit scoreless in seven man-advantage
opportunities.
No. 18 Dartmouth 4 at No. 10/12 Union 1:
Dartmouth used three goals, two of them power-play strikes, in the
first period to take an early lead over Union that it never
relinquished enroute to a 4-1 win Friday night in the Dutchmen's
Messa Rink. The win improves the Big Green to 11-5-2, 7-3-1
in ECAC Hockey while Union fell to 15-7-3, 7-3-1. The home
loss ended a 12-game home unbeaten streak (11-0-1) dating back to a
3-2 (5OT) ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal loss against Quinnipiac on March
12, 2010 for Union. Despite outshooting Union, 13-7 in the
first period, the Dutchmen ended up with 40 shots to the Big
Green's 33. Forward Scott Fleming netted two goals for
Dartmouth including the game-winner in the first period and an
empty net goal late in the third period. Sophomore Kyle Bodie
scored his sixth goal of the season in the loss, and now has five
points (four goals, one assist) in his last four games
played. James Mello recorded a season-high 39 saves on the
night for the Big Green, while Keith Kinkaid finished with 29.
At No. 13/14 Rensselaer 3, Harvard 2: The
conference’s second leader scorer senior Chase Polacek scored
two goals, including his nation-leading fifth game-winning tally,
to lead Rensselaer to a 3-2 victory over Harvard, at the Houston
Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 14-6-3
overall (6-5-0 ECAC Hockey), while the Crimson fall to 3-14-0
(2-10-0 ECAC Hockey). Allen York (13-6-3) finished with 36
saves, including 29 in the final 40 minutes for the win. Kyle
Richter (3-9-0) ended the night with 13 stops, as he never had to
make more than six in any given frame for the Crimson.
Michael Del Mauro and Pier-Olivier Michaud found the back of the
net on the evening for the Crimson. Harvard finished 1-for-8
on the power-play, while Rensselaer was 0-for1.
At Brown 2, St. Lawrence 1: The Bears won
back-to-back games for the first time since November as they edged
the visiting Saints, 2-1. Freshman Garnet Hathaway scored for
the second straight game, breaking a 1-1 tie early in the third
period to lift the Bears. Brown improves to 7-7-4 overall and
5-5-1 in league play, while the Saints, who play at number
one-ranked Yale Saturday night to complete a difficult road trip,
are now 7-11-4 overall and 3-7-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Brown
has now taken at least one point from the Saints in league action
for the 19th straight year with the home win in the first of two
meetings between the two teams this season. Mike Clemente
recorded 25 saves, while Matt Weninger made 27 for the
Saints.
At Colgate 1, Cornell 1 (ot): Central New
York rivals Colgate and Cornell skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Friday
night at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. The tie sends the Big
Red to 7-9-2 overall on the year and 5-5-1 in ECAC Hockey action,
while Colgate moves to 3-18-2, 0-9-2 in league play.
Raiders’ sophomore Jeremy Price scored with 1:35 remaining in
regulation to force overtime. The Raiders won the shot battle
by a 25-19 margin and each team failed to score on the
power-play. The Big Red saw Locke Jillson score its lone goal
with the only assist awarded to Sean Collins. Mike Garman
made 24 stops in net with nine coming in the second period to keep
the game scoreless for Cornell. Colgate went 0-for-2 on the
man-advantage, while Cornell had three opportunities, including a
five-minute power-play.
