Weekend Update: Union & Yale Keep Pace

ALBANY, N.Y. --Four of the top nine teams in the ECAC Hockey standings posted wins last evening highlighted by Union winning an overtime thriller at Clarkson and Yale recording a convincing win at Quinnipiac maintaining the top two spots.

No. 3/3 Yale 6 at Quinnipiac 1:  Yale kept pace in its quest for the Cleary Cup Friday evening as five different players hit the net and Ryan Rondeau stopped 30 of 31 shots as the third-ranked Bulldogs beat Quinnipiac 6-1 before 3,957 at the TD Bank Sports Center. Denny Kearney had two goals while Chad Ziegler, Kevin Limbert, Jimmy Martin and Brian O'Neill tallied goals as the Elis outshot the Bobcats 42-31. Kenny Agostino had two assists on a night when his team scored two shorthanders. Yale went 1-for-6 on the power-play while the Bobcats scored once on five attempts. Quinnipiac freshman Kellen Jones scored the Bobcats only goal of the game. Eric Hartzell stopped 23 shots in goal for the hosts.

No. 7/7 Union 4 at Clarkson 3 (ot): Sophomore forward Wayne Simpson scored at 3:48 of overtime to lift Union to a 4-3 win over Clarkson in front of 2,132 fans at Cheel Arena. The win was Union's eighth straight victory, a school record in the Division I era. Union set an all-time program record for wins, surpassing the previous mark of 22 wins set by both the 1976-77 and 1984-85 teams. Union outshot Clarkson 38-28 for the contest, as Keith Kinkaid made 25 saves for his 22nd win of the season. Junior Paul Karpowich made 34 saves in the Clarkson net. The Dutchmen went 1-for-7 on the power-play, while Clarkson was 1-for-5 with the man-advantage.

At St. Lawrence 5, No. 14/14 Rensselaer 3:  Freshman forward Greg Carey scored twice and St. Lawrence scored five goals on one of the nation's leading collegiate goaltenders as the Saints upset 14th-ranked Rensselaer 5-3 in a ECAC Hockey game at Appleton Arena Friday night. The Saints improve to 10-16-6 on the season and 6-12-1 in league play while RPI is now 18-9-4 overall and 10-8-1 in the league. Robby Moss (5-4-2) made 21 saves to earn the victory, while Allen York (16-7-3) stopped 24 shots before being relieved by sophomore Bryce Merriam midway through the third. Merriam turned away all seven shots he faced in 11:45 of ice time. The Saints improved to 9-1-1 on the season when scoring the game's first goal and are now 5-0-2 in games that they led after the first period.

At Colgate 5, No. 16 Dartmouth 3:  Colgate downed 16th-ranked Dartmouth, 5-3, Friday night as assistant captain Francois Brisebois had two goals, while Jeremy Price tallied three points for Raiders. Brisebois he now has scored in 10 of his last 12 games. Eric Mihalik played solid in net with 33 saves to earn his third win in his last four starts. Dartmouth was led by Dustin Walsh who tallied a goal and an assist along with Matt Lindblad adding two helpers. Adam Estoclet and Connor Goggin had the other two goals for the visitors. James Mello posted 28 saves in net and took only his fifth loss of the year.

At Princeton 7, Brown 3:  Princeton snapped a four-game winless streak with a big 7-3 win Friday night over Brown at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton’s seven goals matched a season high as it climbed to fourth in the ECAC Hockey standings with the win. Kevin Lohry led the Tigers with two goals and an assist for three points. Taylor Fedun also added two goals from the blue line, while Andrew Ammon added a goal and an assist and Matt Arhontas had two helpers. Princeton goaltender Alan Reynolds stopped 30 of 33 shots for the win while Mike Clemente stopped 14 shots in the loss. Marco De Filippo had 22 saves in relief. Princeton converted on three of seven power-play chances while the Tigers killed all five Brown power-plays.

Harvard 4 at Cornell 3:  Harvard downed rival Cornell as Alex Killorn scored twice and Danny Biega netted the tie-breaking goal with 7:21 left in the game for the Crimson win. Ryan Carroll made 10 of his 27 saves in the final period for the victory. Cornell's Mike Garman stopped 24 Harvard shots as the Big Red held a 30-28 shots advantage. Nick D'Agostino, Joe Devin and John Esposito each scored a goal for the Big Red. Harvard finished the night 3-for-4 with the man-advantage. Cornell finished the evening scoreless in three power-play attempts.
