Weekend Update: League Leaders Keep Pace
ALBANY, N.Y. --The top three teams in ECAC Hockey - Yale, Union
and Dartmouth - each earned two points in the first part of weekend
play to maintain their spots in the league standings. Four out of
the league’s five ranked teams earned points last evening.
The road was kind to ECACâHockey teams as four
out of the six visitors in league action earned points as well.
At No. 2/3 Yale 1, Harvard 0: The Bulldogs’
defense bounced back in a big way and their offense came up with
the one clutch goal they needed in posting a 1-0 home win over
rival Harvard last evening at Ingalls Rink. Captain Jimmy Martin's
goal at 5:36 of the third period was the ultimate reason why the
Bulldogs improved to 18-4-0 (12-3-0 ECAC Hockey). Another big
reason was Ryan Rondeau, who stopped a season-high 34 shots,
including 25 over the last 40 minutes leading the Bulldogs to a
perfect 13-0-0 record at home this season. Crimson netminder Ryan
Carroll made 34 saves to help Harvard (4-17-0, 3-13-0 ECAC Hockey)
hold the nation's top-scoring offense to one goal.
No. 8/9 Rensselaer 3, Quinnipiac 3 (ot):
Quinnipiac overcame a two-goal deficit late in the second period to
tie nationally-ranked Rensselaer in an ECAC Hockey match-up in
front of a sell-out crowd at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden,
CT. Junior Jeremy Langlois turn in his third two-goal game in his
last five outings for the Bobcats. Quinnipiac goes to 6-6-5 in
league play while RPI moves to 9-5-1. Eric Hartzell finished with
28 saves on 31 shots for the night for the Bobcats while Allen York
tallied 26 saves and Bryce Merriam finished with 13 for the
visitors. Quinnipiac was 1-for-2 on the power-play while also
killing all four RPI man-advantages.
No. 11/11 Union 7 at No. 19 Princeton 4: In
a battle of nationally ranked teams, No. 11/11 Union (19-7-3,
11-3-1 ECAC Hockey) netted four unanswered goals in the second
period which helped lead the Dutchmen to a 7-4 win against No. 19
Princeton (14-7-1, 9-5-1 ECAC Hockey) in front of 1,691 fans at
Hobey Baker Rink. Junior forward Kelly Zajac had a goal and three
assists to help the Dutchmen storm back from a 4-1 deficient. Adam
Presizniuk (1g, 1a), Matt Hatch (2a), Daniel Carr (1g, 1a) and Mat
Bodie (1g, 1a) were multiple-pont scorers for the Dutchmen.
Forwards Andrew Calof and Mike Kramer each netted a goal and an
assist for the Tigers. Keith Kinkaid made 28 saves for the win
while Mike Condon stopped 25 in the loss. Shots were even at 32 in
the game.
No. 17 Dartmouth 3 at Brown 0: The Big Green
posted their sixth win in their last eight games (6-1-1) by
blanking Brown, 3-0 on a historic night in the Bears’ Meehan
Auditorium. The victory was the 200th Dartmouth victory for head
coach Bob Gaudet. The win moves Gaudet to 200-190-50 at his alma
mater as he is the second winningest coach in Dartmouth history.
Dartmouth is now 13-6-3 overall, 10-4-2 in the ECAC Hockey, while
Brown falls to 7-11-4 overall and 5-9-1 in ECAC Hockey. James Mello
tied his season-high with 39 saves in the shutout while Mike
Clemente finished with 21 for the Bears. Forwards Doug Jones (1g,
1a), Matt Lindblad (1g) and Nick Walsh (1g) found the back of the
net for the winners.
At Cornell 5, Clarkson 2: Cornell, which has
only lost once in its last nine games (6-2-1) continued its hot
play by cruising past Clarkson, 5-2 Friday at Lynah Rink. Joe
Devin had a goal and two assists while Greg Miller chipped in a
pair of assists to lead the Cornell offense. Mike Garman got the
start and picked up 23 saves on the night as Cornell went 3-for-5
on the power-play for the evening. For Clarkson, Brandon DeFazio
and David Pratt scored goals, with Jake Morley picking up two
assists. Paul Karpowich made 23 saves in the losing effort for the
Golden Knights. Clarkson finished the evening 1-for-6 on the
power-play.
St. Lawrence 4 at Colgate 0: Senior Nick
Pitsikoulis scored two goals, George Hughes had a goal and an
assist as the Saints went 3-for-5 on the power-play and killed off
five Colgate power-play chances to stop the Raiders, 4-0 Friday
evening. The Saints improve to 8-13-5 overall and 4-9-1 in league
play. Colgate, which lost its eighth straight to St. Lawrence, is
3-22-2 overall and 0-13-2 in the league. The Saints outshot the
Raiders 26-24 and went 3-for-5 on the man -advantage. Robby Moss
earned his third win of the year between the pipes with 24
saves.
