Just before Yale and Dartmouth squared off last season, Yale forward Denny Kearney received a text message from a member of the Big Green that warned of violence — flying elbows, in particular. “Make sure you keep your head up,” it read.

Kearney laughs at the memory. The message wasn’t from some league foe hell-bent on taking him out with a dirty play. It was a joke, a sarcastic barb courtesy of junior Dartmouth defenseman Jim Gaudet, a fellow native of New Hampshire’s Upper Valley and one of Kearney’s best friends since childhood.

“There’s always a little bit of that beforehand,” said Kearney, a senior. “Once we’re on the ice, I try to put the game face on and stay focused, but it’s cool to be out there playing against one of your best friends.”
