Iles, D'Amigo to Represent U.S. at World Juniors
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Cornell freshman goaltender Andy Iles and former Rensselaer standout Jerry D'Amigo are among a group of 22 players named to the 2011 U.S. National Junior Team that will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship December 26, 2010-January 5, 2011, in Buffalo, N.Y., USA Hockey announced.
"I'm excited with this group of guys moving forward," said U.S. National Junior Team head coach Keith Allain, who serves as the head coach at Yale. "We've got good speed and talent across the board, which should help us in a tournament with so many skilled teams."
D'Amigo is among eight returning players from the gold medal-winning 2010 U.S. National Junior Team, while Iles was a member of the gold medal-winning 2010 U.S. National Under-18 Team.
Iles has gotten off to a strong start for the Big Red this season, appearing in seven games, starting six of those, and posting a 2.38 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage to go along with his 2-3-1 record. His inclusion with Team USA for the World Junior Championships means he will miss the Big Red's two games at the Florida College Classic on Dec. 29-30 in Estero, Florida.
In his one season with the Engineers, D’Amigo played in 35
games, tallying 10 goals and 24 assists for 34 points. He was third
on the team in points, second in assists and fourth in goals. Three
of his goals came on the power play, while one was shorthanded and
a team-high three were game-winners. He signed with the
Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer and currently plays for the
Toronto Marlies of the AHL.
D’Amigo missed four games while playing for the 2010 United
States World Junior Championship Team. He led that team to a gold
medal by scoring 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) to rank second in
the tournament and on the team. He was first on the U.S. in goals
and third in assists. He was also a plus-7. He was the team’s
Player of the Game twice and had multiple-point efforts in each of
the three games in the medal round.
