Trio Maintains Recognition in National Polls

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The trio of Yale, Cornell and Union continues to earn the respect of the voters in the men’s hockey weekly national polls, garnering spots in the latest polls, released Monday.

Yale holds the No. 5 slot in the USCHO.com (758 points) polls, earning seven more total points in the poll, while falling one spot to the No. 6 position in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll (324 points), losing 21 points from last week’s poll.  Yale, which opened practice on October 15, is looking to make it three straight conference regular season titles, NCAA Tournament appearances, and 20-win seasons under head coach Keith Allain.  The Bulldogs will scrimmage Dartmouth on October 23 before taking to the ice the weekend of October 29-30 in the Ivy Shootout.

This week Cornell is ranked No. 12 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, totaling 113 points and No. 13 in the USCHO.com poll with 406 points.  Cornell opens up the 2010-11 season this weekend with a pair of exhibition games.  The Big Red will take on the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink before battling the U.S. U18 National Team Saturday, also at 7 p.m.  The regular season begins a week from Friday with the Big Red taking on New Hampshire, the team that knocked Cornell out of the NCAA tournament last spring, in a 7 p.m. contest Friday, Oct. 29, at Lynah Rink.

Union (3-1-0) overall, dropped two spots from No. 16 to No. 18 in the USCHO.com poll posted a 1-1 record last weekend.  The Dutchmen, making their longest road trip in the history of the program, were edged by Alaska, 2-1 in the opening round of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, then came back Saturday to hang on to a 4-3 win over Alaska-Anchorage.  Union earned 236 points from the voters.   

Rensselaer, Colgate, and Quinnipiac also received votes in the polls.

About the Polls:

The 16th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association.  The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the five NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey Magazine, the most widely distributed hockey magazine in the world.

The USCHO.com/CBS College Sports XXL Poll consists of 50 voters, including 28 coaches from the Division I conferences and 22 beat writers and sports professionals from across the country.  The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college sports, including hockey, lacrosse, soccer and others.
