Trio in National Spotlight

ALBANY, NY – Yale, Union, and Rensselaer once again have been recognized by the national voters in the two 2010-11 college hockey national polls released Monday, November 15, 2010.  Yale remains a top five team, sitting in the No. 5/5 position, followed by Union in the No. 12/14, and Rensselaer maintaining the No. 18 position.

After a weekend split on its west coast trip Yale now holds a 5-1-0 record on the young season.  The Bulldogs have netted 32 goals in six goals, averaging 5.33 goals per contest, leading the nation.  The Yale offense was in true form Saturday, as it won its fifth consecutive game downing Colorado College, 5-1.  The Bulldogs would jump out to an early 3-0 lead on Air Force the following evening, but the Falcons soared back with four goals of its own to claim a 4-3 win.  In this week’s USCHO.com poll Yale has earned 786 points and fell two spots from the No. 3 position to the No. 5 spot.  The Bulldogs also fell in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll to the No. 5 (370 points) from the No. 4 position last week.   Yale continues on the road this weekend, heading to Central, NY to battle Cornell, Friday, and Colgate Saturday in ECAC Hockey play.

After a hard fought weekend with Route 7 Rival Rensselaer, Union earned a split in the home-and-home series last weekend with the Engineers.  The Dutchmen continue their home hot play at Messa Rink, where they are now 5-0-1 this season with a 2-1 win over Rensselaer Friday evening.  The Dutchmen would see their eight-game unbeaten streak (5-0-3) come to an end the following evening at Houston Field House, as Rensselaer scored a dramatic, 4-3 overtime win.  As a result Union fell two positions from the No. 12 spot to the No. 14 position (387 points) in the USCHO.com poll and stayed in the No. 12 spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll (114 points).  This marks the 20th consecutive week that Union is nationally ranked, extending its school record.  Union will have an off week next weekend.

Rensselaer, recipients of last weekend’s split with Union, maintains No. 18 ranking in the USCHO.com poll (171 points) and received some votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll (7 points).  The Engineers have the second best scoring defense in the nation (1.82 G/GM) having only given up 20 goals in 11 overall games.  The Engineers are back in action on November 26 & 27, when they host the 60th Annual Rensselaer Holiday Tournament at the Houston Field House.

Dartmouth, Cornell, Princeton, Clarkson, and Quinnipiac all received votes in the national polls this week well.
