Tigers Earn Road Win at St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. (1/28/11) - Taylor Fedun had two goals and an assist to help lead the 19th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-3 win at St. Lawrence on Friday night at Appleton Arena. Princeton never trailed in the win despite St. Lawrence twice cutting Princeton's lead to a single goal.
Fedun provided both Princeton goals in the opening period, scoring his fifth of the season on the power play at 13:33 and notching his sixth three minutes later by joining the rush up ice. The first goal came on a two-man advantage as Andrew Calof won an offensive-zone draw back to the Fedun, who exchanged the puck with defensive partner Derrick Pallis before scoring with a shot high off the near post.
The second goal came off the rush as Andrew Ammon and Matt Farris had a 2 on 1. Farris' pass attempt for Ammon was blocked but Farris collected the puck and sent it towards the goal where it bounced off both leg pads of Saint netminder Matt Weninger before stopping in the crease. Fedun, trailing the play, got to it first and slid it over the line or the two-goal Princeton lead.
Each team scored twice in the second period as St. Lawrence got within one before Princeton opened a three-goal margin. Jordan Dewey made it 2-1 when he scored on a blast from the point on the power play that beat a screened Mike Condon at 5:32.
Princeton answered at 9:49 when Ammon scored a shorthanded goal that was reviewed by video. Kevin Lohry and Ammon had a 2 on 1 in the St. Lawrence zone. Lohry's pass to Ammon was blocked but the puck rolled in on Weninger who stopped it, but had the rebound bouce off of Ammon and into the Saint net. The play was reviewed to determine if Ammon had kicked the puck into the net, but after a lengthy delay it was determined to be a good goal. It was Princeton's sixth shorthanded goal this season.
Mike Kramer made it 4-1 at 15:26 on his eighth goal of the season after he redirected a Matt Arhontas pass through the legs of Weninger. Fedun also assisted on the goal, which gave Kramer at least a goal in three straight games. St. Lawrence completed the scoring in the period when Justin Baker scored with 37 seconds remaining in the period. Baker made a great stop on the blue line and chased the puck behind the goal line before banking the puck off of a Tiger defender and into the net, ending the second period with his team down 4-2 to Princeton.
The Saints got back within a goal in the first minute of the third period when an offensive zone faceoff win following a Princeton icing resulted in a Saint goal. Nick Pitsikoulis had the marker when he redirected a Jared Keller pass.
That was as close as St. Lawrence would get however as Princeton got an insurance goal at 12:38 from Calof to seal the 5-3 win. Mike Kramer stole the puck in the defensive end and he and Calof went the other way with the play resulting in Calof's fourth goal of the season with a wrist shot on the stickside of Saint netminder Robby Moss.
Condon made 29 saves to backstop Princeton to the win, while the Saint goalies combined for 23 saves. The Princeton special teams again played well with the Tigers scoring while on the power play and while shorthanded.
Princeton is now 13-6-1 overall and 8-4-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Tigers improve to 8-1-1 in their last 10 and moved into sole possession of third place in the league with the win. Princeton will look to complete the weekend sweep tomorrow afternoon at Clarkson at 4 p.m.
