No. 5 Union and Quinnipiac Skate to Tie
SCHENECTADY, NY - Quinnipiac forward John
Dunbar scored at 13:06 of the third period to help the Bobcats
(13-13-7, 6-9-6 ECAC Hockey) earn a 2-2 tie with No. 5/5 Union
(24-7-4, 16-3-2 ECAC Hockey) in front of 1,968 fans at Messa
Rink.
Off a faceoff win in the offensive zone, Dunbar fired a quick
wrist shot past sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid to tie the game,
ultimately sending the contest into overtime.
The Dutchmen had the best opportunity to win the game in the extra
frame, as junior forward Kelly Zajac fired a wrist shot towards
that appeared to be heading towards an open net before the goal was
dislodged with six seconds to play.
Senior forward Adam Presizniuk and sophomore forward Kyle Bodie
each scored in the second period to give Union a two-goal advantage
midway through the contest.
With the Dutchmen on their first power play of the game, senior
forward John Simpson fired a shot from straightaway. Presizniuk,
stationed in front of the net, tipped the puck past Quinnipiac
goaltender Dan Clarke for his 12th goal of the season at 3:14.
Union took a 2-0 lead at 9:00, when sophomore defenseman Greg
Coburn fed Bodie with a long pass from the defensive end. Bodie
skated into open ice and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of
Clarke to give Union a 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats struck back at even strength when Brooks Robinson
chipped a puck that fluttered over the shoulder of Kinkaid at
16:35, cutting Union's lead in half before the third period of
play.
In the opening frame, the Dutchmen were outshot 11-7 in the first
period, and were forced to kill off three Quinnipiac power plays.
Kinkaid an the Union penalty was up to the task, as they were the
entire night (6-for-6 on the penalty kill).
Union's best chance of the period came at the 18:00 mark. Senior
forward Andrew Buote made a nice give-and-go pass to senior forward
Justin Pallos, whose shot on net was kicked away by Clarke.
For the game, Union outshot Quinnipiac 33-24 and when 1-for-2 on
the power play. With Yale's 1-1 tie against Quinnipiac, the
Dutchmen still control their own destiny in the race for the Cleary
Cup.
Union will host Princeton on Senior Night at Messa Rink, tomorrow
night at 7:00 p.m.
