Engineers Upend Dartmouth
TROY, N.Y. – The 13th/14th-ranked Rensselaer men’s
hockey team scored three goals in a span of 7:38 in the second
period, on its way to defeating 18th-ranked Dartmouth, 5-1, in ECAC
Hockey action, at the Houston Field House. With the win, the
Engineers improve to 15-6-3 overall and 7-5-0 in league play. The
Big Green falls to 11-6-2 (7-4-1 ECAC Hockey).
Senior Joel
Malchuk (Brandon, MB/Dauphin Kings) opened the scoring at
2:20 of the opening frame, stuffing in a rebound off a shot by
freshman Johnny
Rogic (North Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs).
After carrying the puck up the left wing, Rogic drove the net,
creating a rebound opportunity for Malchuk, who buried his fourth
of the season.
Rensselaer then exploded for three goals after 11 minutes had
elapsed in the second period, including two power-play tallies.
Senior Chase
Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) ripped home a
one-timer off a cross-ice feed from sophomore Nick
Bailen (Fredonia, NY/Indiana Ice) to make 2-0 Engineers
at 11:15 of the second. Senior Tyler
Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) got the
play started from the high slot to earn the second assist on
Polacek’s 14th goal of the season.
Helfrich and Polacek helped set up freshman Brock
Higgs (Kingston, NY/Kingston Voyageurs) for the
Engineers’ second man-advantage tally of the period. Helfrich
sent the puck down low to Polacek, who found Higgs all alone at the
right side of the cage, for his fourth of the year. The marker put
the Engineers up 3-0 at 16:51 of the frame.
Junior Alex
Angers-Goulet (St. Augustin, PQ/Langley Chiefs) extended
the RPI lead to 4-0 with just 1:07 to play in the second, when
finished on a close-range shot off a pass from classmate Josh
Rabbani (Woodland Hills, CA/St. Louis Bandits). Bailen
earned the second helper on Angers-Goulet’s fourth of the
campaign.
Dartmouth freshman Eric Robinson (Foxboro, MA/Cedar Rapids
Roughriders) got the visitors on the board at 2:07 of the third
period, picking up a carom off the backboards and beating RPI
junior neminder Allen
York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) for his second of
the year. Senior Evan Stephaens (Bessemer, MI/Cedar Rapids
Roughriders) and junior Doug Jones (Mareitta, GA/Cedar Rapids
Roughriders) earned the helpers.
Rensselaer pushed its lead back to four goals (5-1), when Malchuk
found sophomore Marty
O’Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) crashing the
net at 11:34 of the third.
York (14-6-3) made 18 saves, while Dartmouth starting goaltender
James Mello (Rehoboth, MA/NH Junior Monarchs) stopped 21 shots,
before being relieved by junior Jody O’Neill (Nepean,
ON/Smith Falls Bears). O’Neill was able to turn away five of
the six shots he faced in 20 minutes of work.
The Engineers are back in action next Friday and Saturday, when
they host Brown and 1st-ranked Yale on Friday (7pm) and Saturday
(7pm), respectively. Saturday’s contest will be the 34th
Annual Big Red Freakout! Dartmouth hosts Cornell and Colgate on
