HAMILTON, N.Y.—Robbie Bourdon scored the tie-breaking goal with less than six minutes remaining to lead host Colgate to a 2-1 win against the Harvard men's hockey team Saturday night at Starr Rink.
Danny Biega scored for the third straight game and Kyle Richter made 26 saves, but the Raiders (7-23-2, 4-14-2 ECAC Hockey) handed the Crimson (6-19-1, 4-14-1) its first loss in four games. Bourdon scored from the left side after the game remained tied at 1-1 for 40 minutes.
Eric Mihalik notched 27 saves for Colgate, as each team put 28 shots on goal. Harvard finished 1 for 3 on the power play while killing all three man-advantage chances for the Raiders.
An offensive-zone give-and-go from Rence Coassin to Luke Greiner and back earned Harvard the game's first power play. Mihalik kept the Crimson off the board with a pad save on Alex Killorn and a glove save on Marshall Everson.
The Colgate goalie could not overcome an outstanding series of passes on the next Crimson man advantage, as all five Harvard skaters touched the puck in the offensive zone. Michael Biega pushed it up the right wall to Killorn at the bottom of the circle. He fed Daniel Moriarty, who dropped a backhand pass from in front to Chris Huxley at the left post. The co-captain passed back across to Danny Biega in the slot for the high-glove finish.
The Raiders evened the score at 1-1 when Chris Wagner won a race to a long dump-in and got off a quick shot from in close at 13:49. Harvard held an 8-5 edge in first-period shots.
Richter had the first great save of the second period when a pass from behind the net found Mark Nasca in front. Nasca crashed into Richter after the shot and was called for goaltender interference, but Mihalik stopped both Crimson shots during the ensuing power play. The Raiders got their first power play later in the frame but were held without a shot on goal. They outshot Harvard, 11-9, overall in the period.
The Crimson pinned the Raiders deep on a dominant shift early in the third period, and Dan Ford's shot appeared headed for the top right corner until the shaft of Mihalik's stick deflected the puck just over the crossbar. Richter countered by stoning Francois Brisebois on a two-on-one break and stopping Bourdon coming out of the corner on a Colgate power play. The Raiders outshot Harvard, 12-11, in the final frame.
