Clarkson Edges Saints for Season Series Sweep
It was another case of a good effort with a bad result at Appleton Arena on Tuesday night as Clarkson swept the season series with St. Lawrence with a 2-1 win which virtually eliminates the Saints from any chance of a first-round home ice berth in the upcoming ECAC playoffs.
Junior center Louke Oakley snapped a 1-1 tie with his third goal of the season 5:10 into the third period and junior goaltender Paul Karpowich made it stand up for the win as he stymied the Saints for the third straight time.
Karpowich made 37 saves and held St. Lawrence to one goal for the third time this season as the Golden Knights won a regular season game in Canton for the first time since 2007. Clarkson improves to 14-14-2 overall and 8-9-1 in league play while the Saints are now 9-16-5 overall and 5-12-1 in league play.
"We had our chances, but didn't finish them off," said Saint coach Joe Marsh. "Clarkson took advantage of its chances and we couldn't convert on ours...it has been that kind of year.
Oakley scored the game winner right after a series of near misses for the Saints and saves by Karpowich at the other end of the ice. Wing Adam Pawlick took the puck into the Saint zone and fed Allan McPherson, who in turn relayed the puck to Oakley, who was all alone between the faceoff circles and snapped a shot which beat Saint goalie Robby Moss just under the crossbar.
"Moss turned in another great effort in goal," said Marsh. "You can't fault him on either of the goals."
Clarkson scored the only goal of the first period 3:56 into play as senior wing Scott Freeman corralled a rebound of a shot by Julian Cayer and put it back past Moss for his ninth of the season. The goal was Freeman's 15th career point in 16 games against St. Lawrence.
St. Lawrence tied the game just nine seconds into its third power play chance of the game. The Saints won the draw in the Clarkson end and sophomore defenseman George Hughes sent a shot toward goal which center Jacob Drewiske tipped wide of the goal, but it went right to senior Nick Pitsikoulis who hit the wide open net for his ninth of the year at 17:10. It was Pitsikoulis' fifth goal in his last seven starts
The Saints had chances to pull even after Oakley's go-ahead goal, but couldn't pull it off despite pulling Moss for an extra attacker with 1:07 to play in regulation.
