Radiers Doubled Up at Union
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (2/12/11) – The Colgate
men's hockey team jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first
period, but ninth-ranked Union netted the next five goals and
handed the Raiders a 6-3 defeat at Messa Rink on Saturday
night.
Colgate (5-23-2, 3-14-2 ECAC) got goals from three different
skaters, while Kurtis
Bartliff led the team with two points on two assists.

McNamara were the scorers and rookie Eric
Mihalik did what he could in net with 30 saves and five
goals against.
The Dutchmen (22-7-3, 14-3-1 ECAC) saw Adam Presizniuk net two
goals, while Daniel Carr and Josh Jooris posted two points on a
goal and an assist. Stephane Boileau had two helpers on the night
and Keith Kinkaid made 24 saves for his 21st win of the year.
Colgate drew first blood with 9:59 left in the first period with a
goal from Day for his ninth of the season. Matt
Firman was given an assist on the play after he fired the
puck off the backboards and got a great bounce. Day charged the
puck and took a low shot that slipped past Kinkaid for the 1-0
lead. Christian
Long was also awarded an assist for the Raiders.
Larkin pushed the lead up to 2-0 with a power play goal on the
Raiders' third power play opportunity of the period. After
receiving a pass from Bartliff, Austin
Smith chipped the puck over a Union stick and back to
Larkin at the point. He then took a slapper from the point and it
found its way through Kinkaid to give Colgate a big 2-0 lead.
Union got on the board with 13:50 left in the second period with
Presizniuk cutting the lead to 2-1. Matt Hatch tried a wrap around
that Mihalik stopped, but the rebound came to Presizniuk, who was
charging in from the right circle and hit the net for the goal.
The Dutchmen tied the score at 2-2 with a goal by John Simpson at
the 5:12 mark with the assist to Boileau. Union pressured a tired
Raider defense and it paid off. Mihalik put forth a great effort
with multiple saves, but he was pushed into the net during a scrum
and Simpson somehow made contact with the puck for the goal.
Presizniuk gave the Dutchmen their first lead of the game at 3-2
with 14:45 left in the game with his second of the night. Kelly
Zajac skated pas the Colgate defense and went in on a 2-on-0.
Mihalik made the initial save, but without the defense, Presizniuk
hit the open net on Union's 10th-straight shot of the period. Carr
pushed the lead up to 4-2 just 16 seconds later with the assist to
Jooris. It took the Dutchmen nine shots to score on Mihalik in the
period and then scored on their next two.
Union increased its lead to 5-2 on its first power play goal of
the night on the team's second man advantage of the night. Jooris
gave the Dutchmen a commanding lead with the team's 42nd power play
goal of the season with the assists to Jeremy Welsh and Carr.
Colgate stopped the five-goal streak with 2:12 remaining in the
third on a goal by McNamara, who scored his second of the weekend.
Francois
Brisebois was given the assist on the play to make it
5-3. Wayne Simpson scored his second of the night a minute later
with an empty netter with 1:12 left.
NOTES: Day scored his first goal since Dec. 19 at Robert
Morris … Colgate scored first for the 14th game this season
… Larkin scored his first goal and first point since the
Niagara game on Dec. 14, ending a 14-game scoreless streak …
Long tallied his first point since the game against Yale on Nov. 20
… Firman recorded his second point in the last three games
… Brisebois is on a three-game point streak and has tallied
at least a point in nine of his last 11 games … McNamara
scored his third goal of the year and second of the weekend
… 12 shots on goal by Colgate in the first were more than
Cornell had the entire night on Friday at Union in a 4-0 win for
the Dutchmen.
