Harvard Falls in Beanpot Semis
BOSTON - The Harvard men's hockey team gave up three second period goals and Northeastern skated to a 4-0 victory over the Crimson in the semifinals of the 59th Beanpot. The Huskies will advance to play the winner of the Boston College versus Boston University game, while Harvard will get the loser next Monday.
Harvard earned the first power play of the game and generated some offense, but Northeastern looked dangerous on the counterattack, forcing a Carroll save on a two-on-one break. Following the expiration of the penalty, the Huskies took the lead on a rush up ice. Mike McLaughlin had the puck on the left side, cut back to the middle and scored from the slot at 10:48.
The Crimson battled back with several chances on consecutive shifts, but Rawlings stopped each and finished the period with 17 saves. The Huskies logged 10 first-period shots.
McLaughlin doubled the lead in the second minute of the second period. After the Crimson failed to clear the zone on a broken play, Northeastern grabbed puck. McLaughlin's shot from the right side took a bounce off Carroll's stick, into the air and over Carroll, hitting the ground just before trickling over the goal line.
Steve Silva made it 3-0 in favor of the Huskies midway through the period, when a pass from the corner found him in the low slot. Brodie Reid slammed home Northeastern's third score of the period on a one-timer shortly after the expiration of the first of two Harvard interference penalties. The Huskies held a 14-11 edge in second-period shots.
The Crimson and the Huskies traded shots throughout the third period, Northeastern with seven on goal and Harvard with 13, but neither team found the back of the net. Harvard was unable to convert during an impromptu 6-on-4 opportunity with about five minutes remaining in the game, finishing the game outshooting Northeastern, 41-31, but Rawlings turned away each shot and the Crimson fell, 4-0
Harvard hosts Princeton Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center before returning to the TD Garden next Monday to face either No. 1 Boston College or No. 14 Boston University.
