Rensselaer Drops Playoff Series to Colgate
TROY, N.Y. – Sophomore Robbie Bourdon scored at 10:06 of
the second overtime to lift the Colgate University men’s
hockey team to a, 2-1, victory over 15th/16th-ranked Rensselaer, at
the Houston Field House. With the win, the Raiders (9-25-3) advance
to the quarterfinals of the ECAC Hockey Playoffs, while the
Engineers drop to 20-12-5.
Bourdon (Montreal, PQ/Taft School) took a shot from the top of the
right circle that found its way through a screen and past RPI
junior netminder Allen
York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) for the
game-winning tally. Junior Corbin McPherson (Folsom, CA/Cowichan
Valley) and freshman Chris Wagner (Walpole, MA/South Shore Kings)
earned the assists on Bourbon’s tenth goal of the season.
The game-ending goal came 2:30 after Raiders’ senior Austin
Mayer (Providence, RI/Providence) rang a shot off the post and had
another shot gloved away by York, who made four saves in the second
overtime session.
Colgate scored the games first goal at 13:08 of the first period,
when Mayer finished a short-handed breakaway. Junior Austin Smith
(Dallas, TX/St. Paul’s School) stole the puck at the Colgate
blue line and pushed it ahead for Mayer, who beat York, high
glove-side.
RPI senior Tyler
Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) drew
the hosts even at 14:48 of the second stanza on a backhander from
the low slot. A shot from the point by senior defenseman Jeff
Foss (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) was pushed to the right
corner for junior Mike
Bergin (Ottawa, ON/Smiths Falls Bears), who threw the
puck in front of the net to Helfrich for the tally.
Both teams created chances to score in the third period, but were
unable to come up with the go-ahead goal. York stopped all 11 shots
he faced in the frame, while Colgate freshman goaltender Eric
Mihalik (Avon Lake, OH/Des Moines) came up with eight saves.
The Raiders carried play through the early stages of the first
overtime, culminating with a shot by senior Francois Brisebois
(Montreal, PQ/St. Paul’s School) that found the pipe to
York’s left at 6:20 of the frame. Colgate outshot the
Engineers 11-8 in the period.
