St. Lawrence Edges Tigers to Force Series to Third Game

PRINCETON (3/5/06) - The Princeton men's hockey team had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but got in trouble with penalties as St. Lawrence rallied to earn a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon in the second game of the ECAC Hockey First-Round Playoff series between the two teams at Hobey Baker Rink.

St. Lawrence's win forces a third and decisive game in the series on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. Tickets for the game will be available beginning at 3 p.m. at the Baker Rink ticket office.

Princeton had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but each time St. Lawrence answered and then went ahead when Kyle Essery converted off the rush midway through the third period.

Rob Kleebaum gave Princeton a 1-0 lead six minutes into the first period as the Tigers scored on their first shot on goal for the second night in a row. Kleebaum got the puck along the wall and gave it Mike Kramer in the corner. Kramer gave it back to Kleebaum in the slot and he scored his 12th goal of the season off the far post to put Princeton ahead.

St. Lawrence answered four minutes later with its first of two power-play goals from Greg Carey. Both times Carey scored from the point through a screen and his goal at 9:38 evened the score at one midway through the first.

Princeton again gained a one-goal lead in the second period when Andrew Calof netted his ninth of the year at 4:13. Kramer dumped the puck into the Saint zone and Kleebaum got it along the end boards where he sent a centering pass in front that caromed off Calof's stick and through the legs of Matt Weninger for the goal.

The Saints again evened the score at 12:09 when they scored with a two-man advantage. Carey got the puck up high and broke his stick on a shot. Jared Keller and Nic Vangog worked the puck and got it back to Carey, who by then had gotten a new stick from the bench and this time he beat Princeton's netminder Sean Bonar for the equalizer.

The score remained tied at two until Essery's goal at 9:42 of the third. The shot was St. Lawrence's last of the game, but Weninger and the Saint defense stood tall as Princeton threw everything it had on the Saint goal but couldn't find the tying goal.

Princeton outshot St. Lawrence 30-22 in the loss. Weninger made 28 saves for the win while Bonar had 19 in the loss.

Princeton is now 17-12-2 while the Saints are 11-20-5.
