Engineers Tie Bobcats
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men’s ice
hockey team overcame a two-goal deficit late in the second period
to tie nationally-ranked No. 9 Rensselaer in an ECAC Hockey
match-up at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. A sell-out
crowd of 3,492 saw junior Jeremy Langlois turn in his third
two-goal game in his last five outings. Quinnipiac goes to 6-6-5 in
league play while RPI moves to 9-5-1.
Connor Jones scored the game-tying goal, his eighth of the season,
midway through the third period to ultimately force overtime.
RPI scored first when Bryan
Brutlag flipped a shot over Quinnipiac goalie Eric
Hartzell’s shoulder to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
Langlois tied the game five minutes later when he took control of
the puck behind RPI goalie Allen
York and stuffed the puck in on a wrap-around to knot the
score at 1-1.
RPI rattled off two more goals in the second period, as Brock
Higgs and Jeff
Foss both scored. Higgs took a blast from the point that
beat Hartzell glove-side before Foss punched the puck past a diving
Hartzell after the sophomore goalie denied him twice before. With
less than two minutes to play in the second period, Langlois
deposited his 15th goal of the year with assists to Russell Goodman
and Ben Arnt.
Jones’ goal came at the 11:50 mark when the freshman forward
intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and skated in, one-on-one,
on RPI’s Bryce
Merriam. Jones faked left, brought the puck back and
blasted a shot past Merriam, who entered the game after York left
with an injury.
Hartzell finished with 28 saves on 31 shots for the night while
York tallied 26 saves and Merriam finished with 13. Quinnipiac was
1-for-2 on the power play while also killing all four RPI
man-advantages.
