Union Falls to Bemidji State in Mariucci Classic
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – In the deciding game of the Mariucci Classic, Bemidji State forward Matt Read scored twice as No. 12/14 Union (11-6-3) fell 3-1 to the Beavers (7-10-1) at Mariucci Arena. The win was Bemidji State’s fourth straight against ranked competition, and second in as many nights, as the Beavers defeated No. 18 Ferris State 3-2 in their first game of the tournament.
Read gave the Beavers an early lead with a goal in just over five minutes into the first period, and helped seal the victory with his second tally, a power play goal at 1:58 of the third period.
Read’s second goal on the man advantage was a wrist shot from the slot over the shoulder of sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid, giving Bemidji State a commanding 3-1 lead.
Freshman forward Daniel Carr, who entered the game fourth in the nation in rookie scoring, notched his 11th goal of the season in the loss.
The Dutchmen had two power play chances at 12:20 and 15:38 of the third period, but Bemidji State goaltender Dan Bakala made several key stops, including a sliding glove save on sophomore Jeremy Welsh’s slapshot with 2:48 left to play in the third period.
Bakala stopped 30 shots for the win, while Kinkaid (10-6-2) made 18 saves in the contest. Union finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play, while Bemidji State went 1-for-2 with the man advantage.
The Dutchmen had the jump early on in the contest, drawing a power play 58 seconds into the contest and holding the Beavers without a shot in the first five minutes of the game, but the Beavers struck on their first scoring chance of the contest. Read fired a wrist shot from the high slot into the top corner to give Bemidji State the early lead at 5:27. Read’s goal marked the sixth straight road game that Union has allowed the first goal.
The Dutchmen would answer back at 15:23 of the second period on their second power play opportunity of the frame. With 11 seconds on the man advantage, freshman forward Daniel Carr pounced on a loose puck in the slot and beat Bemidji State goaltender Dan Bakala with a backhand shot to tie the game at 1-1.
The Beavers would regain the lead in the second period when George, Bemidji State’s leading scorer, completed an odd-man rush up the ice with a low wrist shot past Kinkaid at 7:30 to put Bemidji State up 2-1.
Union will return home to Schenectady to host St. Lawrence at 7:00 p.m. as they start a stretch of 16 ECAC games to finish the regular season.
