Zarbo's OT Goal Lifts Clarkson Over St. Lawrence
Before a crowd of 5,500 at Halloween
Faceoff in Lake Placid, the Clarkson University
Hockey team pulled out a 2-1
overtime triumph against archrival St. Lawrence University in
non-conference action in 1980 Herb Brooks Arena Saturday night as
freshman Matt Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) tallied the
game-winner at 2:36 of the sudden-victory period. Junior
Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay,
ONT) was solid in goal with a 34-save effort to
notch his 19th career victory.
Zarbo collected his second goal of the
season, knocking in a rebound off of rookie defenseman
David Pratt’s (Napanee, ONT) shot at the top
of the crease to lift the Golden Knights to their
fourth win of the season. Junior Nick Tremblay
(Candiac, QUE) also assisted.
After scoreless first period, Clarkson took
the initial lead at 7:55 of the middle frame. Skating shorthanded,
junior Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) started the
play when he blocked a shot at the Knights’ blueline and fed
a pass to junior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY), who
broke in alone and lifted in his third goal of the season, and
Clarkson’s second shorthanded goal of the year.
The Saints came back to tie the game late
in the period when Max Mobley punched in a rebound off of Matt
Raley’s shot at 15:06.
After both teams failed to covert for their
second goal in the third period, despite three power-play chances
apiece, the Knights came out strong in the overtime session to post
their 112th all-time victory over their North Country rivals.
St. Lawrence, who remain winless on the
year at 0-4-3, outshot Clarkson 35-23, but the Green and Gold had
all four shots in the extra session.
Clarkson was 0-of-6 on the power play,
while the Saints went 0-of-8 on the man-advantage.
The Knights, at 4-2-1, begin ECAC
Hockey play this coming weekend when they open a five-game
home stand at Cheel Arena, hosting central New
York rivals Colgate and Cornell.
