Tigers Edged by Dartmouth in Season Opener
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (10/29/10) - A third period goal from Dartmouth's Paul Lee was the difference as the Big Green topped the Princeton men's hockey team 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the season opener for both teams at the Ivy Shootout at Ingalls.
Following a scoreless first period that saw Dartmouth outshoot Princeton 13-7, the Big Green solved Princeton freshman goaltender Sean Bonar 43 seconds into the second period when Evan Stephens scored on the team's 15th shot on goal. Assists on the goal came from Scott Fleming and Matt Reber.
Princeton answered the Dartmouth goal late in the second period to send the game to the second intermission tied up at a goal apiece. The goal came on the Princeton's second power play of the night and came from senior Matt Arhontas with assists from classmate Mike Kramer and freshman Andrew Calof.
In the third period Lee gave Dartmouth the one-goal lead back when he scored at the 4:08 mark. The goal came less than a minute after a Princeton penalty expired and was assisted by Jason Bourgea and Nick Walsh.
Dartmouth outshot Princeton 29-22 in the game and held shot edges in both the first and third periods. Bonar made 27 saves in his collegiate debut but took the loss. Jody O'Neill made 21 saves in the Dartmouth goal for the win.
Princeton was 1 for 4 on the power play in the loss, while Dartmouth without a goal in six power-play chances.
Princeton is now 0-1 overall. The Tigers will look to break into the win column tomorrow against either Brown or Yale.
