Devin's Four-Point Night Propels Cornell
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior Joe Devin scored a pair of goals and
added a pair of assists to lead the Cornell men's hockey team to a
6-0 victory over the U.S. U18 National Team in an exhibition
contest on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. Cornell freshman and US
National Team alumnus Andy Iles earned the shutout victory,
recording 30 saves in his Cornell debut.
Sean Collins added a goal and two assists on the night for the Big
Red, while John Esposito and Keir Ross both had a pair of assists.
Kirill Gotovets picked up a goal and an assist, with Rodger Craig
and Tyler Roeszler both adding a goal. Dustin Mowrey also got on
the scoresheet with an assist in the contest.
For Team USA, Matt McNeely stopped 36 shots in goal in the loss.
USA went scoreless in four power-play chances, while the Big Red
was held off the scoreboard in both of its power play
opportunities.
Collins got things rolling early with his goal just 43 seconds
into the game, with Devin and Ross both picking up an assist on the
play, with Devin and Collins converting a 2-on-1 rush through the
neutral zone. At the 6:31 mark of the first period, Gotovets added
to the lead when he sidestepped a USA forward at the blue line,
skated to the top of the faceoff circle and unleashed a wrist shot
that snuck under the arm of McNeely and trickled across the goal
line, as the Big Red took a 2-0 lead into the first
intermission.
In the second, it was Devin getting the first of his two goals on
the night at the 10:41 mark of the period, converting from Collins
and Ross. Just under a minute later, Gotovets sent a shot on net
from the point that McNeely stopped, with the rebound coming
directly in front of the goal. Craig was camped out there and
jammed at the puck twice, with McNeely stopping both attempts, but
his third crack at the goal was successful, lifting it up and over
the outstretched leg of the netminder for the 4-0 Big Red lead.
In the third period, Roeszler scored at the 7:35 mark of the
period, taking a feed from the half-wall from Mowrey and easily
putting the puck past McNeely. Devin then capped the scoring with a
goal at the 19:20 mark of the period, with Esposito and Collins
again picking up helpers.
With the two exhibitions in the books and the Big Red putting 12
goals on the board in the two games, the team now turns its
attention to the season opener on Friday against New Hampshire at
Lynah Rink. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
