Colgate Drops Heartbreaker in Final Seconds
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Lake Superior State’s Dan Radke scored with 14 seconds left in regulation to send the Colgate men’s hockey team back to Hamilton without a win as the Lakers defeated the Raiders 5-4 in the series finale.
Colgate (1-2-0) was swept by its CCHA foe this weekend, but tonight’s loss wasn’t because of lack of effort from the Raiders. Senior captain Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) tallied two goals and an assist for three points, while junior Austin Smith (Dallas, Texas) tied a career-high with four assists and four points. Senior Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) set a career-high with three assists and tied a high with three points. Junior goaltender Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) faced 40 shots and made 35 stops to take his second loss of the year.
Lake Superior (2-3-1) got goals from five different skaters, while Radke added a goal and an assist for two points and Zach Trotman posted two assists. The Lakers had 12 players record at least one point. Kevin Kapalka pushed aside 26 shots from the Raiders to earn the win.
Lake Superior State got on the board first with a goal from Chad Nehring to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Dan Barczuk and Kyle Jean added the assists and for Barczuk it was his second point of the series. The goal came at the 3:52 mark and Colgate hurt itself by going 0-for-3 on the power play in the opening period. The Raiders were outshot 11-10 in the period with both netminder making 10 stops between the pipes.
Colgate evened up the score as sophomore Thomas Larkin (Cocquio Trevisago, Italy) netted his first of the season just 1:44 into the frame. He went backhand to forehand on a rush and the puck found its way past Kapalka to tie the game at 1-1.
The Raiders finally made Lake Superior pay on the power play with Day extending his scoring streak to three games with his third of the season. Smith found Day in front. The captain had his initial shot stopped, but he stayed with it and scored Colgate’s first goal with the extra skater this season on its 13th power play of the year.
Brisebois also moved his point streak to three games with his third of the season.
The Lakers answered with two goals 41 seconds apart during a 4-on-4 situation late in the second period to regain the lead at 3-2. Matt Cowie tied the game with his third of the season coming at the 1:44 mark. Trotman and Rick Schofield added the assists. The bleeding continued 41 seconds later as Fred Cassiani put a soft shot on net that crossed up Evin and the puck made it to the back of the net for a 3-2 Lake Superior lead going into the final period.
The Raiders killed a penalty right off the opening faceoff of the third period and made the Lakers pay again on the power play with a goal from junior Robbie Bourdon (Montreal, Que.) with 14:04 left in the game. The Montreal native sniped a shot from a sharp angle and beat Kapalka to make it 3-3. Smith added his third helper of the game and Day also connected on an assist for his second point of the day.
Colin Campbell gave the lead back to the Lakers for the third time at 4-3. He received a pass from Will Acton at the left dot and Evin couldn’t beat the puck to the post as Campbell scored his first collegiate goal. Day answered 48 seconds later on a nice tip in for his second goal of the game and ninth career multi-goal game. Smith once again factored in on the goal with an assist, while Brisebois fed Day with a nice slap pass for his third helper of the game.
Radke netted the gamewinner on a rush by the Lakers with 14 seconds left with the assist going to Trotman to give Lake State the 5-4 win.
The teams combined for eight goals in the final 40 minutes and the Lakers outshot the Raiders 40-30 in the game, but Colgate answered some questions on their power play with two goals with the extra man in six opportunities.
The Raiders will be back in Hamilton or the home opener on Oct. 30 against Sacred Heart at 4 p.m. at Starr Rink
