Balanced Offense Lifts Dutchmen
SCHENECTADY, NY - Union received contributions from six different goal-scorers as the men's ice hockey team secured a 6-1 victory against Niagara on Friday night at Messa Rink.
Sophomore forwards #Wayne Simpson and Jeremy Welsh, and senior forward #Adam Presizniuk# each had a goal and an assist to lead the way for the Union offense.
Sophomore goaltender Keith Kinkaid made 20 saves, and freshman goaltender #Troy Grosenick# added three saves in the third period in his collegiate debut With the victory, the Dutchmen improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Purple Eagles fell to 0-1-2.
Union faced some early pressure from Niagara, as they were outshot by the Purple Eagles 9-4 and forced to kill off two first period penalties.
But the Dutchmen outshot Niagara 18-3 in the second period, and outscored the Purple Eagles 4-1 in the frame. Union struck first, as they have in every game this season, at 2:37 of the second period, when Wayne Simpson scored on the power play to give Union a 1-0 lead.
Presizniuk moved into sole possession of 11th on the school's all-time scoring list at 8:55 finishing off a give-and-go with junior forward Kelly Zajac.
Just under a minute later, Welsh scored his fifth goal in as many games from a sharp angle to put Union ahead 3-0 at 9:51.
Senior forward Justin Pallos chased Niagara goaltender Carsen Chubak with a goal from the side boards at 12:01.
Niagara forward Scott Arnold scored at 17:12 to spoil Kinkaid's shutout bid.
Union tacked on two more goals in the third period, from senior forward John Simpson at 4:23 and freshman forward Daniel Carr at 6:38 to seal the victory.
The Dutchmen will host RIT at 7:30 pm tomorrow night at Messa Rink.
