Raiders Edged on the Road

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Coglate men’s hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 game at Lake Superior State on Friday night despite outshooting the Lakers 32-28 in the contest.

Colgate (1-1-0) got a goal from senior captain Brian Day (Danvers, Mass.) with senior Francois Brisebois (Montreal, Que.) and rookie Chris Wagner (Walpole, Mass.) earning the assists. Junior Alex Evin (Castlegar, B.C.) stood tall in net with 26 saves, including 11 in the final period.

Lake Superior (1-3-1) earned its first win of the season thanks to Dan Barcuk’s game-winner in the second period and Brian Mahoney-Wilson stopping 31-of-32 shots faced. Domenic Monardo scored on the power play for the Lakers in the first period as well.

Lake Superior took an early lead on the Raiders with a power play goal from Monardo for his third of the year with the assist to Rick Schofield. The goal was scored just before the 16-minute mark of the opening period. Colgate answered back with 8:46 on the clock on Day’s second of the season as he hooked up with linemates Brisebois and Wagner to tie the game at 1-1. For Brisebois and Wagner it was their second helper of the season. Shots were an even 10-10 after the first frame.

Barczuk’s game-winner came just 2:16 into the second period with the assists going to Matt Bruneteau and Kyle Jean. Colgate had a 10-7 advantage in shots during the second period, but couldn’t capitalize.

Each team earned an opportunity on the power play and both came up empty.

Colgate put pucks on net in the third period with 12 totals shots, but Mahoney-Wilson turned away each of them and held the Raiders scoreless on its lone power play opportunity. He won his first game of the season and gave the Lakers a 2-1 win in their Pink at the Rink game.

Each team earned three power play chances and Lake Superior was the only team to score with the extra skater.

The two teams hook up again tomorrow with an early evening start at 5 p.m. at Taffy Abel Arena.
