Five-Goal First Powers Big Red
ITHACA, N.Y. -- A five-goal first period behind two goals apiece
from seniors Joe Devin and Tyler Roeszler would be more than enough
offense as the Cornell men's hockey team scored a 6-3 exhibition
victory over the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres on Thursday
night at Lynah Rink.
Roeszler had a three-point night on the evening, with all three of
his points coming in that five-goal first period. Freshman Armand
de Swardt picked up a goal and an assist, while Braden Birch and
Greg Miller both chipped in a pair of assists on the night. Junior
Mike Garman got the start in goal, picking up 23 saves for the
victory for the Big Red.
For UQTR, Francis Guerette Charland had a goal and two assists,
while Etienne Bellavance-Martin and Alexandre Demers both chipped
in a goal. Maxime Frechette, Jean Sebastian Breton and Pierre-Luc
Lessard each added an assist. Jean-Christophe Blanchard had 38
saves in the losing effort for the Patriotes.

minute, following up a rebound off a shot from freshman Dustin
Mowrey. The one-goal lead stood until 5:01 remained in the period
when the Big Red offense erupted for five goals in the final five
minutes of the period. First, it was Devin scoring off assists from
Roeszler and Miller ont he power play, and Roeszler scoring an
even-strength goal from John Esposito and Braden Birch. Joe Devin
scored a short-handed goal with just over 1:30 to play in the
period, and Nick D'Agostino was released from the penalty box
behind the play, picking up an outlet pass from de Swardt and
ripping a wrist shot past Blanchard to make the score 5-0 in favor
of Cornell after on period.
In the second, the Patriotes got one goal back as
Bellavance-Martin scored nearly midway through the period, UQTR
tacked on another pair 1:21 apart in the third period to cut the
Cornell lead to 5-3. It would be de Swardt who put the final
touches on the contest, scoring with 9:02 to play in the game after
picking up a pass from Birch.
