Tigers Edged by Dartmouth
PRINCETON (11/20/10) - Dartmouth scored two opportunistic goals in the second period to overcome an early deficit and defeat the Princeton men's hockey team 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
In the second period Dartmouth managed just three shots on goal but two found that back of the net to turn a game that was deadlocked at 1-1 after 20 minutes into a 3-1 Dartmouth lead.
Dustin Walsh gave Dartmouth a 2-1 lead three minutes into the period when he shoved a loose puck into the Princeton goal. Walsh gained possession of the puck in the Dartmouth end after a Matt Linblad face-off win and dumped the puck into the Princeton zone. The puck bounced off the boards and slid to Princeton netminder Alan Reynolds who tried to cover it. The puck however stayed loose and Walsh was the first man to it and push it over the line.
Linblad struck in the 14th minute of the period with a shorthanded goal to give Dartmouth a 3-1 lead. The goal came moments after a great Princeton chance in the Dartmouth zone, but a Princeton centering pass missed everyone and spring Linblad the other way. Once in the Princeton zone, he attempted a centering pass but the puck bounced off a Tiger defender on its way across and wound up in the back of the net.
Down by two goals entering the third period, Princeton got one back just over a minute into the third period on Kevin Lohry's second goal of the season. After a Dartmouth shot went wide, Andrew Ammon played the puck up to Lohry whose blast overpowered Dartmouth netminder James Mello and cut the lead to 3-2.
Unfortunately for Princeton, that was as close as the Tigers would get as Mello had the answer for Princeton's remaining nine shots in the period.
The teams traded first period goals. Eric Meland put in the rebound of a Jack Berger shot at 13:33 and Andrew Owsiak scored for Dartmouth three minutes later after a turnover in the Princeton zone left Owsiak and Paul Lee on a 2 on 0 with Reynolds. Lee fed Owsiak for the goal, which came on the power play. Rob Kleebaum notched an assist on the Princeton goal.
Mello finished the game with 33 saves to notch the win, while Reynolds had 19 in the loss. Princeton outshot Dartmouth 35-22. Dartmouth was 1 for 2 with the man advantage in the game, while Princeton was scoreless in seven man-up opportunities.
The loss snaps a four-game Princeton win streak and drops the Tigers to 4-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the ECAC. It was also the seventh one-goal game of the season for the Tigers. Princeton visits Quinnipiac on Tuesday.
