PRINCETON, N.J. Matt Lindblad (Winnetka, Ill.) tallied a short handed goal and assisted on the go-ahead, to help the Dartmouth men's hockey team take a 3-2 win over Princeton, snapping the Tigers four-game win streak and helping the Big Green salvage two league points on the weekend.
Lindblad gave the Big Green a two-goal lead in the second period when he scored his first and the team's first shorthanded goal of the season at 6:13. Dartmouth came down and was attempting to clear when goalie Alan Reynolds mishandled the puck, allowing Lindblad to score on shot with is arm outstretched as the rookie recorded his team-leading third goal of the year.
The Tigers took the early lead off a hard working goal by Eric Meland at 6:27.
Traffic in front resulted in several shots on net as Meland was able to slip the puck across the line for the go-ahead.
Andrew Owsiak tallied his first of the season to tie the score with 3:45 left in the frame. A bad pass in the Princeton end had the puck deflecting off the boards to Paul Lee (Garden City, N.Y.) who centered it across the ice to Owsiak.
The senior one-timed it behind netminder Reynolds for the equalizer.
Dustin Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) pulled the visitors ahead at 16:39 of the second as there was just six seconds left in a Tigers penalty. Lindblad won the faceoff in the Dartmouth end and sent the puck up to Walsh. The sophomore attempted to clear it and sent the puck flying off the boards, Reynolds thought he'd covered it up but as soon as he moved the puck slipped across the line for the score.
Kevin Lohry got one back for the home team just 1:02 into the final frame. Lohry put a hard shot on net as junior netminder James Mello (Rehoboth, Mass.) got his pad out but the puck bounced off his arm and behind him for the score.
The third period was not without excitement and its share of chances as both sides were looking to put more scores on the board but both Mello and Reynolds would not allow anymore across.
The Tigers finished with 35 shots to Dartmouth's 22 as Mello has 20 saves and Reyolds recorded 32. The victory gives the Green a 4-3-1 overall record, 3-2-1 in the ECAC while Princeton falls to 4-4-0, 4-2 in the ECAC.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend with a home-and-home series with Harvard. The two will meet in Cambridge on Friday at 7 p.m. and then in Hanover on Saturday at 7 p.m.
