Rensselaer Tops U.S. Juniors in Shootout
TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Bo
Dolan (St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees) scored the
game-tying goal with 2:43 to play in the third period and
sophomore Marty
O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) notched the
shootout winner to lead the Rensselaer men’s hockey team to a
4-3 exhibition victory over the United States National Juniors
Team, at the Houston Field House.
A Dolan slap shot from the right point tied the game (3-3) at the
17:17 mark of the third period. The freshman defenseman picked off
a clearing attempted and fired into the right side of the cage,
sending the game into overtime.
After a scoreless five minutes, the two sides took 12 rounds of a
shootout to determine the winner. In the deciding frame, O'Grady
lofted a backhanded shot past Andy Iles (Ithaca, NY/Cornell
University) and Rensselaer junior netminder Allen
York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) watched Jerry
D’Amigo’s (Binghamton, NY/Toronto Marlies) attempt
whistle off the right post to secure an Engineers’
victory.
The U.S. opened the scoring, just a minute and a half into the
contest, when a face-off win at the right circle was won back to
Chris Brown (Flower Mound, TX/University of Michigan), who ripped a
shot in the top left corner of the net. Brock Nelson (Minneapolis,
MN/University of North Dakota) earned the lone assist.
Rensselaer tied the game at 1-1, on a power-play goal by sophomore
CJ Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers), 1:39 into the second
frame. Junior Patrick
Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) slipped a pass
in front of the cage, where Lee was able to stick it home.
O’Grady picked up the second assist.
Senior Chase
Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) gave the
hosts a 2-1 lead at the 6:37 mark of the second, when he redirected
a shot from the right point by freshman Johnny
Rogic (North Vancouver, BC/Alberni Valley Bulldogs).
Polacek started the play by leaving a drop pass for Bailen, who in
turn left the puck for Rogic. Rogic then threw a shot torwards
goal, where Polacek redirected it in.
The Under-20 squad pulled even at 9:48 on the second on a
one-timer goal by Emerson Etem (Long Beach, CA/Medicine Hat
Tigers). Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, NV/University of Denver)
delivered a centering pass from the right corner to Etem, who was
all alone in the slot.
Brown gave the visitors back the lead with just six seconds to
play in the period, when he skated up the left wing and wristed a
shot past York, glove side. Nelson was credited with his second
assist on Brown’s second goal.
York finished with 34 saves, including 17 in the first period,
while Jack Cambell (Port Huron, MI/Windsor Spitfires) and Iles
recorded 12 and four stops, respectively.
The Engineers are back in action on December 30, and 31, when
visit Alabama-Huntsville. The U.S. National Junior Team faces the
Czech Republic in an exhibition match-up on Tuesday.
